Due to their low cost, banners are not only more popular than other advertising tools but also often discarded in large quantities after use. To prevent environmental pollution, local governments in South Korea have been promoting the recycling of banners. However, despite the substantial environmental, social, and economic benefits of recycling banners, there has hitherto been very little systematic in-depth study of recycled banner products. This paper outlines the results of a new survey of consumer awareness about recycled banner products. The paper also shows how SCAMPER technique has been successfully deployed in combination with the survey results to design a line of innovative, eco-friendly, and high-fashion products. To make recycled banner products, the working process is as follows: banner collection, selecting and washing banners, cutting out the patterns, design, sewing, and selling. The survey was conducted between October 18 and November 6, 2013. Questionnaires were distributed to consumers in their twenties. A total of 100 males and 100 females in the target population responded. The results show that 63% of the surveyed consumers had never seen recycled banner products, while 87% had never used such products. However, 63% said they would like to buy recycled banner products. The survey thus demonstrated the need for high-quality product design and development as well as active product promotion. The survey included questions about actual recycled banner products from the market, including a pouch, a D.I.Y. key ring kit, two bags, and a pair of sneakers. Respondents suggested that the pouch be produced in various sizes with extra internal storage space. They did not want the material used to look like it had previously been used to make banners. They also expected the pouches to be durable and more waterproof. Respondents wanted the D.I.Y. key ring kit to be more practical, portable, and durable and also recommended more versatile designs. They suggested that the two kinds of bags also look less like recycled banners. Other recommendations included more variety in colors, more internal storage space, fastening devices, and lightness overall. Suggestions on the sneakers included simpler color combinations, improved design, and improved waterproofing. Based on these recommendations, we designed a new pouch, cross-bag, DIY name-tag kit, and pair of indoor shoes. We brainstormed using the SCAMPER technique—substitute, combine, adapt, minimize, maximize, modify, put to other use, eliminate, rearrange, and reverse—as a creative design method. Since the design concept of the products was travel, we selected several travel-related motifs. All products were made with two layers of banner fabric, with the unprinted side of the banner showing on the surface. This was done to improve durability and also so as not to make the material look recycled. We applied the “minimize” to make a small airplane-shaped pouch, while the “combine” was used to merge an inner bag with the cross bag. For the cloud-shaped DIY name-tag kit, we applied the “eliminate”, while indoor shoes were improved by deploying the “combine”. The SCAMPER combination was shown to be a powerful aid to innovation, enabling us to customize the use of recyclable material to meet the demands of both local fashion and utility. The verification of merchantability survey was conducted between February 14 and March 13, 2014. Questionnaires were distributed to consumers aged 20–50. A total of 50 males and females in the target population responded. A social enterprise design team leader and a fashion design professor advised on the project. Based on merchantability verification results and expert design advice, recycled banner products were modified and improved. We re-designed a cross-bag, airplane shaped pouch, a D.I.Y. name-tag kit, and a pair of indoor shoes. For verification of usability, we taught the design and producing process of the D.I.Y. name-tag kit at three recycling working places. After the workshop, some problems in the working process were identified and subsequently addressed in the redrafted designs. In this study, high value products were proposed for aesthetic and design satisfaction. Through the variety process of designing for high value fashion products was to propose development method. It is hoped that this study will contribute to protection of the environment and popularization of recycled banner products. In addition, it aims to bring socially disadvantaged classes employment and income increase opportunities.
