This research aims to investigate the perceptions about eco-friendly floral materials in the usage of floral design materials by educators who are an expert group in the floricultural industry, flower shop owners, and a consumer group in Korea and the UK. Based on the comparisons of these 3 groups’ perceptions between the two countries, this research seeks to provide basic information that is needed to vitalize eco-friendly floral materials in Korea. Data were collected from questionnaires filled out by Korean and British subjects. The results of the data analyses including a frequency analysis, a reliability analysis, a cross-tabulation, and a t-test using PASW 20.0 are as follows. First, regarding the perception of biodegradable, eco-friendly floral materials by flower shop owners and educators in educational institutions, 100% of the British subjects revealed the perception of those materials whereas few of the Korean subjects recognized them. Second, as for the necessity to develop eco-friendly floral materials, all three groups including the consumers, flower shop owners, and educators in educational institutions shared the need to develop eco-friendly floral foam. A relatively large number of British consumers answered that they felt the need to develop eco-friendly floral containers. Third, with respect to the willingness of the consumers and flower shop owners to purchase biodegradable, eco-friendly materials, far more flower shop owners in the UK than those in Korea showed such willingness and the concern about the environment was the main reason for purchasing those materials. Fourth, with regard to the willingness of the consumers and flower shop owners to purchase eco-friendly floral materials which are 1.5 times as expensive as regular materials, more British respondents than Koreans indicated that they were willing to buy those eco-friendly materials. Taken together, it appears that eco-friendly floral materials are not yet well recognized in Korea. Therefore, there is a need to form a positive image of eco-friendly floral materials and to promote the fact that those materials can ease the concern about the environment. This study has limitations in external validity that is the extent to which the outcomes of research can be generalized to other situations or other people. That is, this research was done with people of only two countries, Korea and the UK, and, accordingly, it is somewhat hard to extend these results to people of other countries. Besides, the sample sizes of the educational institutions and flower shops were rather small. Hence, future studies need to secure sufficiently large samples and to conduct statistical analyses on data collected from people of other countries as well. The self-administered questionnaire method may have led to a bias, which calls for further studies addressing this problem and carrying out deeper investigations.
