Sculpture refers to the creation of a three-dimensional shape from formlessness. In other words, it means that a sculptor gives life to a lifeless thing and then makes it an artistic work. For the present, however, people regard the firsthand presentation of object and the expression of diverse character as more important than the simple production of sculptures, based on the above concept. In the area of sculpture, such materials as steel, stone and stainless are traditionally used in the production of works. However, it is not too much to say that with the development of technology in recent times, the area of object which can be used in sculpture has been enlarged limitlessly. A steel sculpture that symbolizes the sculpture of modern times in the period of industrialization has brought epoch-making changes to the area of sculpture that traditionally used classical materials. A welding sculpture, a core of steel sculpture, is important in the history of modern sculpture to the extent that it even changes the concept of sculpture. Since the use of steel in the area of sculpture is considerably related to its characteristics, a sculptor must understand them correctly in order to make the material and works harmonized, thus creating a great work. The method of electric welding that melting down steel and then affixing fragments together was appropriate for my works, since I wanted to attach a shape to a shape liberally, thus making a sculpture work and expressing the beauty of human body. On this account, I took steel as a subject material of my works. Although we have to live along with others in the modern society, individualism is rampant for the present and all of us suffer from it. In this vein, the story that I wanted to present through lines and planes was the looks of modern society and reality in which I lead life and collide with others. Via the works, introduced in this study, I presented the spatial beauty of human body that was visually perceived, based on the three-dimensional composition of and lines and planes, thus trying to maximize the primary visual effect of their combination.
