One of the main purpose of this research is to learn lessons needed for the future by reviewing both the failure cases and the enforcement cases in underground deep excavation. In addition, a criteria was proposed for the safe lateral displacement of earth retaining walls, which can be used in the future to manage safely deep excavations in urban area. Based on the fifty field monitoring cases of earth retaining walls supported by ground anchors(G/A) in field, where the ground layer was composed of reclamation soil, deposit soil, weathering soil, weathered rock from the ground surface, the measured lateral displacement of walls was compared with the predicted lateral displacement on design. In addition, according to the process of excavation works, the behavior of lateral displacement was analyzed by comparing with existing management criteria of lateral displacement. The results found in this research are summarized in the following. The location, where the maximum lateral displacement of earth retaining wall was happened, moved gradually to lower ground layer according to the process of excavation. Therefore it can be said that the location of maximum lateral displacement was affected by installation of ground anchors. The disturbance of grounds due to installation of ground anchors induced the lateral displacement of walls. The distribution of measured lateral displacement along the wall showed the similar configuration as the prediction on design. However, in general the field measured displacement was higher than predicted displacement; the measured lateral displacement was higher 213% in maximum and 69% in average than the predicted displacement at the final work process(Step 5). This difference may be caused by combination with many complex reasons but mainly the variation of lateral displacement according to the process of excavation and supporting force with application of ground anchor. The major effective reason of safe deep excavation until completion was the immediate application of reinforcement whenever excessive displacement was measured during construction. Therefore, more reasonable deep excavation in urban area should be performed on the basis of field monitoring and comparison with the prediction on design.
