This study analyzes the types of ankle joint injuries of professional female dancers, so that it can provide basic data for treatments and appropriate measures considering the characteristics of dance majors based on the results. To achieve this purpose of study, professional female dancers were selected (30 ballet dancers and 30 modern dancers) with over 10 years’ experience, who had received treatments of ankle joint injuries, visiting L. Orthopedic Surgery Clinic in Seoul from January 2012 through March 2014, and the characteristics by the types of their ankle joint injuries were compared through the results of clinical diagnosis of the same orthopedist, and as a result, the following conclusions were drawn. First, as a result of an analysis of the types of injuries of the ballet dancers, FHL tendinitis accounted for 20.75%, followed by Acute ankle sprain (11.32%), Achilles tendinitis (11.32%), 2nd MT stress fx. (9.43%), Chronic ankle instability (9.43%), Peroneal tendinitis (5.66%), Incomplete fx. tibia (3.77%) and Medial tibia distress syndrome (3.77%). In addition, Heel pain syndrome, Accessory navicular syndrome, Calcaneus pain, 5th MT fx., Lisfranc joint sprain Lt., Heel contusion, Calcaneus anterior pain, tendinitis, Calf muscle strain, Gastrocnemius partial tear, Patellar tendinitis, Tibia stress fx. and Posterior impingement syndrome were included in the types of the ballet dancers’ injuries. Second, as a result of an analysis of the types of injuries of the modern dancers, Acute ankle instability accounted for 18.18%, followed by FHL tendinitis (15.15%), Turf toe (12.12%), Posterior impingement syndrome (12.12%), Chronic ankle instability (9.09%), Patellar tendinitis (6.06%), Heel pain syndrome (6.06%) and Achilles tendon rupture (6.06%). In addition, Acute ankle instability/Double sprain, Posterior tibialis tendon insufficiency, knee medial collateral ligament pain, Osteochondral lesion of talus and Accessary navicular syndrome were included in the types of the modern dancers’ injuries. Third, to sum up the above results, the types of ankle joint injuries of professional female dancers majoring in ballet and modern dance differ in frequency, but no big differences in the kinds of injuries were observed, and distinctively, Turf toe injuries were observed in modern dancers while Achilles tendinitis and Peroneal tendinitis were observed in ballet dancers, and anterior impingement syndrome that is often found in dancers’ ankle joint injuries was not observed. Fourth, as measures for the prevention of injuries as mentioned in the discussion, it is judged that Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) would be effective in managing pain from FHL tendinitis that occurred most in the two types of dance major, it is essential to carry out PRICE therapy, the basic treatment immediately after the occurrence of an injury is essential for Chronic ankle instability due to sequela of ankle sprain, and an intake of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesic drug, a peroneal muscle strengthening exercise and straight leg raising for the improvement of propriocetive sensation would lead to fast return to dancing activities. Lastly, for Achilles tendinitis and Achilles tendon rupture, extension exercise before dance practice would be important, and stress fx. and Turf toe could be prevented by dancers’ wearing appropriate shoes with better elastic bottom. With the above results, it is judged that it would be necessary to carry out follow-up research with more subjects of study in the future, and it is urgently necessary to develop and apply sufficient exercise and scientific training methods to prevent injuries. In addition, fast and appropriate therapy and treatment immediately after an injury occurs could prevent contraction of an injury into a chronic disease.
