As an indirect gasifier, a DFBG (Dual Fluidized Bed Gasifier) has various advantages for gasification of low rank fuels including biomass. The DFBG gasifier consists of two interconnected reactors, a BFB (Bubling Fulidized Bed) gasifier and FFB (Fast Fluidized Bed) combustor, and the medium-heating-value gas (10MJ/m3 or more) of nitrogen free can be obtained with steam as a gasification agent. Since the DFBG system is composed of endothermic and exothermic reactors whose reactant and product are highly interacting with each other, appropriate control of solid circulation is very important for stable operation of the system. However, it is hard to monitor the hydrodynamics of the DFBG system as usual for many fluidization systems. In this study, in order to understand the hydrodynamic characteristics of the hot DFBG, a cold-flow model, which has dynamic similarities with the hot model, was developed based on the scaling laws of Glicksman et al. The target hot flow model is KITECH biomass DFBG system of 200kWth which was designed for supplying syngas for Fischer Tropsch (F-T) synthesis. The solid circulation rate of the pilot DFBG system was predicted by heat and mass balance calculations with the actual operation data (Temperature, pressure drop, gas flow rate) of the pilot system. The hydrodynamics of the cold-flow DFBG system was investigated by numerical simulation with the same geometry of the experiment. The configuration of the cold-flow model was exactly the same as the pilot DFBG with the scale factor of 1/5. Bed materials and fluidizing agent in the cold flow model were selected as bronze powders and air according to the scaling law. The solids circulation rate and pressure loop were measured from the cold flow model and compared with the results from the hot DFBG system. For numerical simulation, commercial CPFD (Computational Particle Fluid Dynamics) software BARRACUDA® was used, and the calculation results were compared with the cold-flow model experimental data. The cold flow model was able to estimate the solids circulation rate and pressure loop of the DFBG with the error bound of 10%.
