There are many studies on magnetic resonant wireless power transfer (WPT) over megahertz-frequency bands because it is expected that simultaneous charging of multiple mobile devices and free positioning of the charging are possible. To increase the power transfer efficiency of magnetic resonant WPT systems in megahertz frequency bands, the design of low loss coils and optimal impedance matching are essential. In this thesis, to achieve efficient WPT regardless of both positions and number of devices, a magnetic resonant WPT system of 6.78 MHz which employs a transmitting coil that supports uniform mutual inductance and capacitive impedance matching networks (IMNs) is proposed. First, a multi-device WPT system is analyzed based on circuit theory to design a highly efficient WPT system. From the theoretical analysis of the system, the relation between the electric parameters of the coils and the power transfer efficiency is derived. In addition, the impedance matching conditions to maximize the power transfer efficiency are presented. Based on the theoretical analysis, coil structures that can control the magnetic field distribution using forward- and reverse-winding parallel loops are proposed. Using the coil structure, a coil supporting uniform mutual inductance is designed for free-positioning WPT. Moreover, the ohmic resistance of multi-loop coils with unequal pitches is minimized by deriving a closed-form formula of ohmic resistance for the coils for the first time. In addition, the optimum capacitances of the capacitive IMNs are derived theoretically by analyzing the IMNs in multi-device WPT systems. The optimal IMN for the multi-device WPT system is suggested by analyzing and comparing the IMNs in terms of power division according to load variation. To verify the results of these analysis, a WPT system using a transmitting coil that supports uniform mutual inductances and a capacitive IMN is fabricated for the first time to simultaneously charge up to a maximum of four devices. By controlling the parallel capacitors in only the transmitting part, reflection coefficients under -10 dB are achieved regardless of the number of devices. Moreover, the fabricated system has power transfer efficiencies from a minimum of 83% to a maximum of 94% according to the number of devices. The proposed system has a higher efficiency than the multi-device WPT systems with hundreds of kHz bands that have been previously reported. Furthermore, the proposed system does not require complex impedance matching circuits. Therefore, the proposed system can be applied to the practical wireless charging of smart phones and tablets.
