This study analyzed the characteristics of stormwater runoff and combine sewer overflows (CSOs) occurring in combined sewer system and explored a solution to maximize the function of sewer pipe such as prevention of water pollution caused by overflows untreated at the time of rainfall. The survey on flow amount indicated that the subject area showed a typical flow amount pattern of residential area that had a flow amount pattern depending on the activities of population and combined sewer overflows (CSOs) appeared around 10 minutes after rainfall. The estimation result of event mean concentration (EMC) of flow showed that the dry season average was BOD: 150.3㎎/L, SS: 52.1㎎/L, CODcr: 288.5㎎/L, T-N: 38.5㎎/L and T-P: 3.8㎎/L, while the water quality analysis in rainy season showed that the average was BOD: 120.2㎎/L, SS: 279.3㎎/L, CODcr: 282.2㎎/L, T-N: 16.6㎎/L and T-P: 2.2㎎/L, which was lower water quality that in dry season. The estimation result of pollutant loads of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) showed BOD: 7,415.5 ∼ 9,171.1㎏/d, SS: 18,396.5 ∼ 20,457.0㎏/d, CODcr: 15,649.8 ∼ 22,953.4㎏/d, T-N: 1,032.8 ∼ 1,257.7㎏/d and T-P: 147.7 ∼ 158.6㎏/d. As shown in the above analyses, overflows were giving a bad impact on water system. Hence, this study investigated a monitoring method for CSOs. The analysis of the characteristic of sewer variation depending on the occurrence of rainfall showed that, at the time of rainfall, the flow amount increased and the electrical conductivity decreased because the ion amount in waste water is more than that in rainwater so that the ion amount was diluted by the inflow of rainwater and consequently the electrical conductivity decreased. Therefore, it is deemed to be economical for the management of CSOs to install most suitable water storage facilities.
