This study was conducted in the hope of helping in preventing sediment disaster by: analyzing major factors at the landslide regions, conducting a feasibility assessment of the regions scheduled as sites for debris barriers, and by installing a debris barrier at the proper locations. 1. The watershed characteristics analysis of the proposed sites of debris barriers in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province are: average drainage area of 107.7ha , average river bed gradient of 8.5%; boundery width of 11.4m; average slope of 27.2O, average effective soil depth of 20.8cm, average soil organic matter content of 3.3%; and flow path length of 1.4 km. 2. In the proposed sites for debris barriers, analysis of landslide risk rating (average) are: Class 1: 4.8%, Class 2: 45.8%; Class 3: 46.7%, and Class 4: 2.7%; distribution based on water system ranking: rank 1: 18 sites, rank 2: 181 sites, rank 3: 95 sites, and rank 4: 9 sites; and ecological naturalness: Class 1: 38 sites, Class 2: 245 sites, and Class 3: 20 sites. 3. Analyses of parent rock, bearing, slope, and stand are as follows: a) the slope of the proposed sites for debris barriers was 27.2O while in landslide regions the gradient is 21O-40O; b) mixed forest of softwood and hardwood comprises 50.5% of the area of the proposed sites for debris barriers while 51.2% of the area in landslide regions are covered with forests; c) igneous rock is the main parent rock in both regions, 53.5% in the proposed sites for debris barriers and 61.6% in landslide regions; and d) in terms of bearings, most of the proposed sites for debris barriers are situated in the southeast (15.5%) and southwest (15.5%) whereas 38.4% landslide regions are in the northeast. Despite the differences in the survey methods used in the proposed sites for installation of debris barriers and the landslide regions, relatively similar results for the comparative analysis of watershed characteristics, slope and forest cover were observed. Significant difference were observed in terms of the percentage composition of soil parent material and bearings. 4. Factors for comparison of the basic characteristics of the proposed sites for debris barrier and landslide regions were limited in the conduct of this study, further studies on this shall still have to be conducted.
