Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine has been drawing the considerable attention due to the high efficiency of reduction in lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions. These benefits are due to the homogeneous mixing process of the dilute mixture of fuel and air during compression. The effects of design and operating parameters on HCCI diesel combustion and emissions, particularly NOx and soot are reviewed. Although the advanced CI combustion mode has the important advantage, there are difficulties in implementing them in practical engines. In this thesis, the principles of HCCI and diesel LTC (Low Temperature Combustion) engines are reviewed along with on the in-cylinder intake and compression motion. This thesis deals with numerical simulations of the turbulent flow process of HCCI engines. An accurate and efficient LES (Large Eddy Simulation) model was developed and used in this thesis to investigate the development of in-cylinder turbulence, swirl, squish, temperature stratification. Compared with the conventional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approaches, LES has the potential of better modelling of spatial and temporal structures in engine combustion chambers. Over the past three decades, most of the CFD research for internal combustion (IC) engines have been carried out using the RANS approach. LES is increasingly used as a tool for studying the dynamics of turbulence in combustion chambers flows due to the better wider generality and accuracy results compared to RANS models. This study presents the appropriate subgrid-scale (SGS) model in the LES for predicting the turbulent flow field in the HCCI engine. In addition, the effects of the model and numerical parameters such as discretization scheme, initial condition, time step of the SGS model were performed. The results of LES using the SGS model were found to be in better agreement with experimental data. The LES results indicated that the effect of the geometry affects the heat transfer between the in-cylinder gas and the bowl wall. Compared with V-type piston engines, the A-type piston engine generates a high level of temperature stratification in the cylinder. Also, the total surface heat flux in A-type is shown to a lower temperature stratification level than in V-type, so as the variable temperature of the intake gas in three cases. Therefore, A-type is not greatly affected by the initial intake temperature. Numerical simulation of the in-cylinder flow for HCCI engines with different bowl shapes has been performed. Combustion chamber geometry is very important to the performance of HCCI engine. The goal of this thesis is to study the effect of piston bowl shapes on the in-cylinder flow characteristics of the HCCI engine using the LES model.
