The prognosis of pancreatic cancer is unfavorable; 78.3% of patients die within a year since been diagnosed. The recurring rate of pancreatic cancer is high. Morever, response to chemotherapy and radiation treatment is poor. It has been reported that the natural anti-tumor agent, SB®, a product including the extracts of Pulsatilla Koreana, Ginseng radix palva and Glycyrrhiza Uralensis suppresses the proliferation and growth of human pancreatic cancer cell line. The goal of the study is to examine the anti-tumor effect of the SB injection through observing the pancreatic cancer patients. The study was undertaken at Sahmyook Seoul Hospital from March 1, 2013 to February 28, 2014. The target group was the patients who had been treated with SB for more than one cycle (one cycle = 5 injections). There were 22 patients eligible; 19 of the 22 participants were in 4th stage pancreatic cancer with distant metastasis. 3 patients died during the course of the study. Electronic medical records of the patients were examined retrospectively focusing on the following data; the change of tumor size before and after treatment, the tumor marker level, and the time of the first diagnosis. OS(Overall response) is 47.4%, DCR (Disease Control Rate) is 79%. The median OS (Overall Survival) is 6.5month(1~33month) and the median PFS (Progress Free Survival) is 2month(1~9month). The SB® was able to provide a practical outcome for patients who were unable to receive treatment via surgical excision and those on which chemotherapy has no effect. Thus, it can be concluded that SB® may be an effective alternative treatment for some cases of pancreatic cancer.
