Natural gas is considered as one of exciting energy for the future. It emits 30% and 45% less carbon dioxide compared to oil and coal respectively. As the source for home heating, natural gas is more efficient than electricity. Natural gas delivers 92% of its total energy to consumer while for electricity 32% of its total energy lost in generation and delivery. There are significant amount of natural gas resources, whether it is in a form of shale gas, unconventional and conventional gas that have not been explored. This then make natural gas businesses are still flourishing. Natural gas liquefaction process is available in various technologies. Propane precooled mixed refrigerant (C3MR) process dominates up to 90% of Liquefied Natural Gas plants that are operated in onshore area. Dual mixed refrigerant (DMR) process was developed to overcome the challenges of liquefying natural gas in arctic environment. Modified single mixed refrigerant (MSMR) process on the other hand was specifically designed for the offshore natural gas liquefaction process. These three processes are unique with their own features and considered to be representative enough as the studied processes for investigating the energy optimizing control structure for natural gas liquefaction processes. The research trend regarding the natural gas liquefaction process is to design this process with higher energy efficiency. Few studies have addressed the optimality of the liquefaction process from process control perspective. Natural gas liquefaction process frequently encounters disturbances that disrupt the performance of the plant, i.e. operation stability and product quality. The action of controllers on bringing back controlled variables to their set-points can be energy consuming, which violates the purpose of optimization. Therefore, at least one control loop with the specific purpose of controlling the energy efficiency during plant operation should be added into the plant control structure. To develop the energy optimizing control structures the optimal behavior of liquefaction processes must firstly be investigated by using a steady-state optimality analysis. This analysis was conducted using rigorous dynamic simulation of the liquefaction process that was built in the Aspen Hysys interface. Numerous step tests on the refrigerant flow rate were conducted and the resulting total compressor duty was recorded. The steady-state operational map that correlates the refrigerant flow rate and total compressor duty was drawn to locate the optimal operation region of the respective liquefaction process. The map also contains information of which combinations of state variables that will give optimal compressor duty. The comprehensive information on the map makes it an excellent tool for selecting the proper optimizing control variable for liquefaction process which further can be used to build the energy optimizing control structure.
