This study aims to find out the Baek seok's consciousness toward the 'sky' that operates his poetry and thus examines the sky in his poems. The sky appears in most of his 'Manchuria poems' rated as the highest peak of his works. In his poems, as the sky is a personal being that has a character caring for some specific things as well as a natural object, he tries to follow the willingness of the sky. Therefore this research considers the sky as a fundamental point for him to pursue his identity as a poet.
Other previous theses have only studied some part of his poems or have regarded his poems as something related to specific religions or philosophies. But, his poems do not reflect these religious ideas directly. So it's maintained in this study that he has a consciousness of the sky, which penetrates his all poems as a poetic pivot.
His awareness of the sky, in early poems, appears as spirituality that leads the world. Spirituality, especially in this paper, means respects to the invisible world. On the basis of spirituality, he shapes traditional ritual into poetic compositions, desires to return to the origin, expresses life-community perspective and universal humanity, and longs for an approach toward the sanctity by determining voluntary poverty.
In his later poems Manchuria poems, spirituality is embodied in the term of sky which is his own poetic imagery about the invisible world. He uses some words to present the sky such as 'things of huge and high' or 'thing to drive the world' and thinks a poet as a being loved by the sky. Looking up to the sky, he awakes to his destiny of a poet and takes it as a will of the sky. Like this, the invisible world in his early poems is to be the sky in his later poems.
That is, his awareness to the invisible world is found in all over his poems and this research calls it 'sky-consciousness'. Through this particular cognition 'sky-consciousness' he is expanding identity of a poet. By investigating the sky in Baek seok's poems, this study provides the focal point to penetrate his poetry. He determines to live as a poet and then reflects on himself. His poems includes introspection and sincerity underlying 'sky-consciousness'. That's why his poems are impressive.
