Due to a growth in refining of crude oil and development of technologies for desulfurization both in South Korea and other nations, a difference between demand and supply of sulfur is on the increase. As a solution for these issues, modified sulfur liquid has been developed. However, despite of outstanding water resistance and chloride resistance of modified sulfur liquid, it could be troublesome to be used since it has to be heated right before use at a site. This is a critical issue for the extensive use of modified sulfur liquid, and to address this issue, modified sulfur power has been developed. In this study, mechanical properties and durability of concrete mixed with modified sulfur liquid and modified sulfur powder were studied in order to check whether modified sulfur powder can substitute modified sulfur liquid. The mixing ratio of modified sulfur liquid and modifier sulfur powder (0, 5, 10, 15, 20%) was set as a variable. In the mortar compression strength & bending stress, it was revealed that mortar compression and bending stress decrease when the mixing ratio reaches 20% or above. From the result, it could infer that the proper mixing ratio of modified sulfur and mortar should be less than 20%. In the concrete slump and air content test, it was shown that there are decreases in slump and air content with the higher modified sulfur mixing ratio. Moreover, in the compression strength and splitting tensile strength test, the strength of concrete was relatively low at the beginning of the period, but as it got longer, the strength was increased at the mixing ratio of modified sulfur power, of 15% and modified sulfur liquid, of 10%. For checking the durability, the water resistance & chloride resistance test was conducted and it showed that the water resistance and chloride resistance are likely to increase with the greater content of modified sulfur in the concrete. By testing mechanical features and durability of concrete mixed with modified sulfur liquid and modified sulfur powder, it was revealed that the proper mixing ratio of concrete and modified sulfur liquid differs from of modified sulfur powder. This difference is caused by a difference in the content of sulfur between modified sulfur powder and modified sulfur liquid, as shown in the XRF analysis. Moreover, the porosities of modified sulfur liquid and modified sulfur powder were measured with the Mercury Porosimeter and it was shown that the porosity of modified sulfur liquid is insignificantly is less than of modified sulfur powder. To visually check these porosities, modified sulfur liquid and modified sulfur powder were placed under the photomicrography, and it showed that the pore size tends to decrease and pore is likely to get filled up with the greater mixing ratio of modified sulfur liquid or modified sulfur powder. From these results, it was possible to conclude that modified sulfur powder is almost equivalent with modified sulfur liquid in aspects of mechanical properties and durability and subsequently, modified sulfur powder has the potential as substitute for modified sulfur liquid.
