(The Life of David Brainerd)와 같은 그의 다른 저술들을 통해 연속성을 지니며 나타나는지 살펴보고 있다.

The Acceptance and Development of Puritan Practical Piety Tradition in Jonathan Edwards : Focused on his Personal Writings
An, Jae Hong Major of Historical Theology The Graduate School Presbyterian University & Theological Seminary
This dissertation examines the piety of Jonathan Edwards(1703-1758), a puritan theologian, minister and leader of the Great Awakening of New England in the eighteenth century. The main objective of this study is to ascertain that Jonathan Edwards accepted puritan practical piety which started in England and to clarify the specific content of it. This dissertation elucidates how he developed“puritanism as a pietic movement”in his private and secret closet with his family, within the specific social environment of the New England church in the eighteenth century.
Most studies about Jonathan Edwards have been done generally based on his formal writings such as revival writings, sermons, and polemical and theological treaties. This study, however, mainly focuses on his personal writings such as his "Resolutions”, "Diary”, "Personal Narratives”, and letters. It is because the features and the characters of the piety of Jonathan Edwards are better found and examined through his personal writings than his precise theological works. In addition, I have found the former shows his private world and his inner life more clearly.
There are seven chapters to this dissertation. Chapter 1 examines the purpose and importance of this study, followed by the historiography of puritan piety and the piety of Jonathan Edwards. Chapter 2 explores the conversion and the means of grace which was the foundation of puritan practical piety. Chapter 3, for the purpose of the understanding of the background of Edwards's piety, examines the “New England Way”and the various phases of Edwards's piety through his life. Chapter 4 explores the overview of his personal writings and emphasizes why Edwards's personal writings are so important to understand the world of his piety. Chapter 5 specifies his contents of the practice of piety which are expressed in his personal writings - meditation and contemplation, prayer, self-examination and mortification, family piety and conference. Chapter 6 explores how the themes of practical piety that are found in Edwards's personal writings are also found in his other works with continuity, such as sermons, Miscellanies, Religious Affections, and The Life of David Brainerd. This process reveals the features of the piety that Edwards had pursued. The final chapter suggests the theological and practical implications of this study, synthesizing all the discussions that have been made so far.
