In this dissertation, the use of Swarm Intelligence(SI) is discussed when an appropriate controller is designed to solve the SOFDP(Static Output Feedback Design Problem), a well-known NP-hard problem that represents BMIs(Bilinear Matrix Inequalities) in a control field. In addition, this dissertation introduces optimization algorithms in the SI field and develops an improved algorithm called PSO with Swarm Arrangement, Parameter Adjustment and Reflective Boundary(PSO-SAPARB), which overcomes the limitations of existing algorithms and has a better performance than existing algorithms. This dissertation also proves the superior performance of the proposed algorithm by comparing it with variants of the existing algorithms.
In recent years, much attention has been given to the optimization problem in various areas. Typically, optimization has been the final objective of all fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, economics, finance, humanities, and social sciences, to name a few. In particular, many algorithms for convex problems among optimization problems have been known and developed. However, if a given problem is non-convex, it is not easy to obtain an optimal solution. The non-convex problem can be solved by converting it to a convex problem or assuming an extremely small step size as linear, when a problem is not differentiable. However, quite often such analytical methods cannot solve the problem.
In such a case, as appropriate solutions, Evolutionary Algorithms(EAs) such as Genetic Algorithm(GA), Simulated Annealing, and Tabu Search Algorithm(TSA) have been used to obtain effective results. Moreover, an algorithm with inspiration from the natural system has been attempted to solve global optimization or NP-hard problems in recent years.
As such, Natural Computing(NC) according to the natural law, which obtains an inspirational idea from the natural system, is also called Meta-heuristic method, Nature-inspired method, or Bio-inspired method. In particular, algorithms or computational methods devised by obtaining inspiration from the behavioral patterns of living organisms mainly have been classified into SI. Various SI algorithms have been developed, such as optimization algorithms that use the behavioral patterns of many living organisms including ants, bees, monkeys, fireflies, cuckoo, bats, and Antarctic krill; and Intelligent Water Drop(IWD), in which a process of raindrops flowing into a river is implemented using optimization algorithms.
A Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) algorithm has affected much of the development of the above algorithms. Most SI algorithms compare their performance with that of PSO algorithms. The PSO algorithm has also been devised by obtaining an inspirational idea from the behavior pattern of a flock of birds or a school of fish. The initial algorithm had a limited performance in terms of search capabilities, search speed, and convergence, but it has now been known as an effective algorithm for solving global optimization, Combinational Problem(CP), or NP-hard problems through several variants and improvements because of the simple characteristic of the computation equation used in the algorithm.
Thus, this dissertation studies and analyzes existing SI-based algorithms and aims to solve limitations by minimizing the deadlock problem that most SI-based optimization algorithms have at the local minimum or maximum point, or premature convergence where convergence occurs too early in the initial execution. In addition, the performance of PSO-SAPARB is compared using benchmark functions widely employed in algorithm performance comparison and evaluation. This dissertation shows the superior performance of PSO-SAPARB by comparing it with other existing algorithms by solving problems with no mathematical and analytical methods for clear solutions, such as SOF controller design problems, and H2 and H∞ optimization.
The improved algorithm proposed in this dissertation, PSO-SAPARB, cannot avoid the No Free Lunch(NFL) theorem problem either, which is known to occur in all algorithms. However, the algorithm proposed in this dissertation avoids the use of complex computations as much as possible, and this dissertation suggests PSO-SAPARB as an appropriate solution for optimization problems with respect to classical benchmark functions and BMI problems. Its superior performance is verified because it can use and improve the characteristics of the PSO algorithm among the SI algorithms.
