Recently, a fluid transport technique is a key issue for the development of microfluidic systems due to the advancement in microfabrication technology. The surface tension overpowers the inertial force and becomes a dominant force in microscale systems. Therefore, fluidic actuation driven by surface tension has drawn much attention of researchers.
A surface wettability gradient has long been applied to control droplet actuations due to the advantage of immediately and naturally droplet movement without external power sources.
Many researchers carried out experimental or numerical studies and examined mechanism for droplet movement through the equilibrium of forces and energies inside the droplet.
As the fundamental studies of the droplet transport by numerical simulation, this study is simulated by using a commercial CFD package, Fluent, with a volume of fluid (VOF) model in order to analyze the droplet motion over time.
First, the grid dependence and the relationship between the adhesive force and cohesive force is confirmed through the spreading motion of droplet on hydrophilic and hydrophobic horizontal surface having surface wettability gradient.
Also, numerical results for the spreading and bounce phenomenon on super-hydrophilic and super-hydrophobic surface compare with the experiment in order to confirm the suitability in this numerical study.
Finally, Three-dimensional analysis for the movement of water droplet is numerically investigated based on the newly method which has proposed by Myong(2014). The new method is that a droplet deposited across the boundary between hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. And the mechanism of an actual water droplet transport is examined through the numerical results of droplet shape and energies inside the droplet. It is found that the strong non-equilibrium state inside the droplet due to the synergistic effect of cohesion force on hydrophilic surface and adhesion force on hydrophobic surface is the key mechanism for droplet movement.
