Recently, as the use of mineral admixtures in concrete increases, numerous studies to examine the effect of mineral admixtures on concrete properties including drying shrinkage have been reported. However, the effects of the mineral admixtures on drying shrinkage have not yet been clearly understood. In this study, in attempt to understand key factors behind drying shrinkage upon use of mineral admixtures, weight loss, compressive strength and pore volume of mortar with varying water-binder ratio and mineral admixtures (Fly Ash, Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag, Waste Glass Sludge) with different replacement ratio were examined. In addition, drying shrinkage characteristics with respect to different mineral admixtures were analyzed in terms of pore structure, pore water and irreversible shrinkage. The findings of the study can be summarized as follows. 1) In compared with OPC mortar, the drying shrinkage of mortar containing FA decreased by as much as 23.48%, while mortar containing GGBS increased by 24.31%. Mortar containing 15% or more WGS showed drastic increase in drying shrinkage up to 200%. 2) All of the mix designs considered in this study, 70% of the total weight loss occurred in 3 to 7 days. As the replacement ratio of FA, GGBS and WGS increased the total weight loss of specimens increased. 3) Total pore volume of mortar decreased with time and mortars containing mineral admixtures showed higher total pore volume compared to OPC mortar. 4) The ratio of the saturated volume of specimen to the total volume of mortar specimen(Vsatur/Vtotal) tends to decrease as the replacement ratio of FA and GGBS increased, whereas mortar containing WGS exhibited no consistent trend. 5) The ratio of the irreversible shrinkage to the total drying shrinkage(RSF) of all the mixtures showed difference values depending on the type of water-binder ratio and mineral admixtures in the range of 0.43-0.91. 6) An analytical equation for predict drying shrinkage (Avg. R2=96%) was drawn on the basis of the experimental results. The sensitive analysis on the equation indicated that the RSF contribute to most to drying shrinkage followed by Elastic modulus and Vsatur/Vtotal.
