A Study on the Effects of Writing through Novel Reading on Adolescents’ Healing
This study was attempted under the recognition that the value of literature may be rediscovered in the therapeutic aspect, and for this study, novel was chosen among various genres of literature. A novel reflects various forms of lives, and characters in a novel experience diverse conflicts and problems happening in their lives and they suffer consequent wounds and pains. The reason that novels have a healing power is that, through the process of reading, the reader can rediscover himself, understand the causes of his conflicts and problems and his inner desires, and look for solutions for them. While reading a novel, furthermore, the reader confronts his real self and reflects on the meaning of life and his past life. Writing is also suggested for more active healing because writing enhances the effect of healing in that, through writing, the person can confess his experiences in psychological wounds, look at the experiences objectively through the purification of his emotions, and gain a new perspective to the experiences. Based on these understandings, this study was started in order to examine the effects of writing through novel reading on adolescents’ healing.
Chapter II explained the theories of literary therapy, the therapeutic nature of novel reading, and writing as a means, and then discussed the meanings of adolescents’ writing therapy through novel reading.
Chapter III formulated research questions ‘What do adolescents experience through reading novels and writing?’ and ‘Through what process do they reach healing?’ and designed a program and presented the research procedure as research methods. Based on preliminary analysis of the participants, the program was designed to have 14 sessions, and novels were selected according to basic guidelines for work selection in literary therapy. With regard to what makes healing possible, moreover, this chapter explained the mechanism of mind therapy suggested by Corsini and Rosenberg.
Chapter IV analyzed the healing process by session, focusing on the researcher’s observation and description of the program, the participants’ texts, and group discussions for feedback and sharing, and presented the therapeutic effect of the program centering on the mechanism of mind therapy. In addition, potentials and limitations observed during the execution of the programs were discussed.
The findings of this study are summarized as follows.
While reading novels and expressing their emotions, the participants realized that others have problems similar to theirs and human pains are universal. This suggests that the participants began to be able to respond to feelings provoked by the novels, and to discover various problems in their inside. With the proceedings of the sessions, they showed increasing interest in and understanding of novels, and became able to explore the meanings of novels by themselves.
Through writing, the participants resolved negative emotions by expressing them, and reflected on themselves. Moreover, writing improved their understanding of themselves and, at the same time, enabled new understanding. Lastly, they showed uplifted self‐esteem, looked for positive future, and began to understand the value of writing.
Through feedback and sharing, the participants exchanged positive support, respect, and comfort with one another, and through these activities, they recognized that they were respectable beings and experienced new positive relationships. As they were strengthened in this way, they resolved to commit themselves to the present, leaving past wounds behind or turning away from them. In this atmosphere, moreover, they realized that they were not alone, and changed their thoughts or tried new actions.
From the perspective of the definition of literary therapy, this study finds its value in that it discovered the therapeutic effect of novel reading and writing and observed changes in the participants.
In literary therapy, healing is not solving actual problems but guiding the participants to express their emotions in front of other group members and receive their positive support concerning the emotions and experiences. In this sense, it is certain that the participants of this study were healed of their wounds. When such activities are continued, their therapeutic effect will be even clearer and is expected to improve the participants’ quality of life.
