This study desires to examine therapeutic meaning of storytelling, art activity, and behavior change of art therapy process through non-structured art therapy targeting children who show selective mutism.
An object of study is the 13-year-old boy who is in accordance with diagnostic standards about selective mutism of DSM-5, and has a problem with sociality and self-expression. The study analyzed the change process of storytelling in art activity, behavior, and art therapy process to seek change of the child and therapeutic meaning of storytelling. In addition, this study conducted social maturity scale and kinetic family drawing test conducted in early interview again, so analyzed social maturity of the child, family interaction, and mental change.
The study results are suggested and discussed as follows.
First, communication and self-expression of the child were changed positively in storytelling process through non-structured art therapy.
Second, personal relationship of the child was changed positively through non-structured art therapy.
Third, social maturity of the child was changed positively through non-structured art therapy, and storytelling reflected a growth process of the child.
Fourth, the child reflected his subjective story in a work of art, and did ‘telling’ through nonverbal creative activity. Problem saturated story changed into alternative story in storytelling process, and the child can find new possibility of his own self and life, and can change.
The results of this study were deducted from only one child with selective mutism, and were mainly through qualitative analysis. The researcher thinks that therapeutic meaning of storytelling found in this study could be expanded to various objects and various genres of art therapy, and it is necessary to proceed studies related to this in the future.
