In this article, space image is divided into ‘water,’ ‘earth’, and ‘sky.’ And the structure of space image of its vertical axis is divided into ‘sky –speaker’s position - earth,’ and that of its horizontal axis is observed from the viewpoint of ‘past space – present space – future space. Then, is investigated how the space image of Lee Yuksa is vertically expanded and extended, and how the principle of contraction and convergence is actualized.
According to the theory of space of Bachelard, the horizontal dimension represents the footsteps of human history, and the vertical dimension represents the space of the contemporary psychological system of speculation, or the space of transcendental imagination which has been moving along with human life. In the space of literature according to this theory, the poem of Lee Yuksa is studied by applying the theory of space: “the point where the vertical axis crosses the horizontal one always represents the existential space, with which as the center the imagination diverges and converges.” This is summarized as follow:
First, this study construes that the poet divides the images of space in the past into ‘water’ and ‘earth’, and that with the respective image the poet recollects the prototype space of his innocent childhood which was recognized by him. And then, he expresses the ruin of the present Heimat observed from the perspective of the present. Here, through the image of space represented in the Lee Yuksa’s poems, his past Heimat based upon his childhood and its pure imagination is articulated. This past space is the space where he should return. The present Heimat where he has return after the long-term wandering remains as a nostalgia toward the past space. This prototype past of the poet is divided into images of space of ‘water’ and ‘earth,’ and the past space in the present is converged with the ‘water and earth’ so that it is presented as a single image of space.
Second, the representation (vorstellung) of a hopeless awareness of a reality is studied. Yuksa’s poem starts from an awareness of colonial reality. His poems contain here and there the consciousness of wandering and displaced existence which he experienced by being exiled from the dark reality. When the historical reality into which he is forsaken is the hopeless reality which he cannot overcome, he cannot help wandering out of his Heimat, and the wandering arouses the consciousness of nostalgia and displaced-ness of Heimat which is left behind and lost. Thus, the main theme of Yuksa’s poem is his view of life as suffering or confinement based upon the consciousness of frustration, anxiousness and wandering. Thus, in the hopeless existence represented as earth and water is permeated the frustration and resentment of dark reality.
Third, Lee Yuksa’s poems continually present the upward space of heliotropism as idealistic space of world. Its typical poetic language is sky, star, flower, tree, and etc. While among them, the ‘sky’ facilitates his transcendental recognition to elevate his position of pure existential being, the ‘star’ signifies his positive existential being, which is the object to entrust his idealistic dream. And his poems present the attempt to overcome fault plane of past and present, or to overcome the discontinuity between self and world through the plant images such as flower and tree.
This space consciousness of Lee Yuksa signifies the attempt to determine a new start by fulfilling the tragic reconciliation of reality consciousness, confrontational spirit and aesthetic consciousness in the setting of conflict and agony, which proceeds from process of self-overcoming. To that extent, the poems contain the implication that a new will of overcoming blossoms at the climax of confrontation and conflict. In this sense, Lee Yuksa’s literature has its valid meaning in closely integrating the past consciousness, present consciousness, and the future-oriented historical consciousness, in dynamically applying them, and thus in completing the philosophy and thought of waiting.
