This research was conducted to examine the relationship among adolescent's metacognition, self-compassion and moral intelligence. In addition, the research sought to investigate the influence of adolescent's metacognition and self-compassion on moral intelligence 324 male and female two middle schools in Cheoungju were surveyed. Specific research questions were as follows.
1. What is the relationship between adolescent's metacognition and moral intelligence?
2. What is the relationship between adolescent's self-compassion and moral intelligence?
3. What is the influence of adolescent's metacognition and self-compassion on moral intelligence?
In order to solve the research questions, MSLQ (Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire), SCS(Self-Compassion Scale), and MIS (Moral Intelligence Checklist) were used. The collected data was analysed by correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis.
The major results of this research were as follows.
First, as a result of the relationship between adolescent's metacognition and moral intelligence, adolescent's metacognition showed a meaningful positive relationship with moral intelligence. Metacognition is appeared to have a meaningful positive relationship with the order of empathy, conscience, self-control, kindness, fairness, respect and tolerance as a sub-factor of moral intelligence. And planning, monitor, regulation, evaluation which are sub-factors of metacognition are also appeared to have a meaningful positive relationship with sub-factor of moral intelligence.
Second, as a result of the relationship between adolescent's self-compassion and moral intelligence, adolescent's self-compassion was revealed to have a meaningful positive relationship with moral intelligence. And empathy, kindness, respect, fairness, tolerance and self control which are six sub-factors of moral intelligence are appeared to have a meaningful positive relationship in with self-compassion.
Third, as a result of adolescent's metacognition and self-compassion's influence on moral intelligence, the influence of metacognition - the independent variable's influence on moral intelligence - has 18% of meaningful explanation to the dependent variable of moral intelligence. In particular among the three sub-factors of metacognition, monitor and planning had the most significant affect in moral intelligence in respective order, while regulation and evaluation factor were not statistically significant. In addition, self-compassion as an independent variable has 18% of meaningful explanation in its influence on moral intelligence as a dependent variable. Particularly, mindfulness and self kindness had significant effects in moral intelligence among the three sub-factors. Common humanity is not statistically meaningful.
Forth, as a result of the influence of metacognition and self-compassion on moral intelligence, two independent variable showed 20% of meaningful explanation about moral intelligence, and metacognition was appeared to have greater influence compared to moral intelligence. This proves that metacognition of cognitive domain such as moral judgment, deduction and etc has more influence on moral intelligence rather than self-compassion which is personal emotional variable.
