During high speed flight, the structural materials used in high speed aerospace flight may be heated to a very high temperature due to transient aerodynamic heating. Deformation measurement at high temperature of a heated material due to thermal and mechanical loading is essential for the determination of its thermal physical properties and mechanical properties, and is also important to select the proper materials and development of the structural design in the high speed flight. Basically, measurement of high temperature thermal deformation of materials and structures faces two challenges: (1) how to create thermal loading to simulate the high temperature environment and (2) how to measure the surface deformation of test sample induced by thermal and/or mechanical loading. In order to simulate high temperature environment, existing works normally employ high temperature chamber or Ohmic heating to exert thermal load. High temperature chamber with tungsten heater is able to exert thermal load accurately but with relatively lower heating and cooling rate due to a relatively large thermal inertia of the sample chamber, while the Ohmic heating is capable of rapid heating (maximum heating rate can achieve 800oC/s), but with difficulty in controlling the applied temperature evenly and accurately across the test sample. Presently, quartz lamps have been used widely in various aeronautical research works to heat up the test materials causing the infrared radiation heating using quartz lamps offers the following attractive advantages: low thermal inertia and excellent electric control performance, suitable for thermal testing of both small and large structures with complex shapes. Traditionally, the contact methods were used to measure the deformation of materials and structures, such as strain gauge measurement, linear variable differential transformer (LVDT measurement), and extensometer. However, they still have some limitations in point-wise data, sensor attachment on sample, allowable temperature, measurement ranging. The non-contact methods include the formation of optical images and diffraction patterns from the specimen surfaces, For instance, speckle pattern interferometry, laser speckle correlation, Moiré interferometry, and photo-elastic coating method can overcome the problems. But all of these methods are difficult to operate and the quantities of measurement results. Recently, non-contact method, digital image correlation technique which uses image processing to go from several images of material for obtaining full-field deformation, and determining strain values. This method does not require attaching sensors on the surface of material or structure. Moreover, this method is often used to measure deformation, displacement, strain, and optical flow; it is widely applied in many areas of science and engineering. One very common application is for measuring the motion. In this study, non-contact full-field thermal deformation measuring system is established by combining the aerodynamic heating simulation system with digital image correlation technique. The thermal deformation, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in heating process and coefficient of thermal contraction (CTC) in cooling process of stainless steel (S304) were measured and compared with the values available on handbook, confirming the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed technique. The thermal deformation of stainless steel ring and aluminum plate, and the thermal interaction behaviors of these both metallic were measured. Finally, in order to confirm the thermal deformation results, finite element analysis were performed using ABAQUSTM software. The two results were compared with each other.
