Because many reptiles carry Salmonella in their intestinal tract and shed it in their feces, it can be a source of salmonellosis cases in humans. Numerous cases of reptile pet associated salmonellosis were reported in the US. Although generally few people have direct contact with reptiles, caution is warranted because many zoos have education and experience program in which unspecified individuals were allowed to handle reptiles. However, Salmonella surveillance of zoo reptiles for prevention was insufficient. In this study, Salmonella prevalence, serotype distribution, source of infection of reptile at Seoul Children Grand Park. we tested total 221 samples (114 samples from 14 serpentarium of the exhibition room and 77 samples from 7 serpentarium of the education room) from may to september, 2014. Of the 221 samples, 33 were positive for Salmonella. positive rate was 14.9%. The reptiles at the education room showed higher prevalence (18/77, 23.4%) than the reptiles at the exhibition room (15/144, 10.4%). All of the 33 positive samples belonged to Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica and a total of 7 serotypes were isolated. serotype distribution were different depend on the feed. Only S. flutern was isolated from both the exhibition room and the education room. PFGE analysis showed that all S. flutern belong to the same pulsotype. Further, antibiotic resistance test showed that all 7 Salmonella isolated early time of sampling were sensitive to 15 antibiotics except 1 S. flutern that had resistance to Nalidixic acid. This study indicated that active surveillance for Salmonella in reptiles and feed for reptiles at zoo was needed. Further, preventive program against human infection including school children should be formulated.
