Mold with shape which tries to be formed is used in the existing press forming method. The mold that was frame of the product was suitable to mass production, and it could greatly increase time and expenses because of design and production of the mold at small quantity production. Incremental sheet metal forming processes that could produce products from metallic sheets were used.
Being different from press process, incremental forming formed locally that tools contacted blank required exact forming accuracy. This study investigated shape error caused by spring back, surface roughness at friction between tools and materials, and cusp caused by tool path interval that were forming precision factors of incremental forming, and it found out forming conditions.
At first, the study investigated process parameters having influence upon forming precision. And, the study added process parameters of positive and negative increment forming, kind of tool path, and die existence of incremental forming in addition to process parameters of cutting process such as process parameters, for instance, feed, tool size and step size that had influence upon forming precision.
The second study investigated effects of positive and negative increment forming upon surface roughness and shape error of AL 1050. The study found out use of both formed surface and opposite surface of incremental forming to investigate effects of forming processes upon formed surface as well as shape errors of opposite side of forming. In this study, formed surface after positive forming was found to be the best from point of view of shape errors and surface roughness.
The third study investigated effects of forming processes (positive and negative) upon shape errors. The positive forming has been known to have better forming precision than negative forming has, and quantitative analysis result has not been disclosed yet. At study on one-step shape of AL1050, no die negative forming was found not to deteriorate forming quality than positive forming did. However, at two-step or more shape, no die forming was found to produce serious shape error.
The finding was likely to be useful at decision making of conditions and methods of incremental forming process with high precision of given shape.
