In this study, the difference of plastic deformation behavior of grade 2 purity titanium and grade 4 purity titanium which have different content of oxygen was interpreted and the changes of microstructure and mechanical property were compared and analyzed by EBSD and tensile test. Also, changes of microstructure and mechanical properties by changing solution treatment temperature and cooling rate of Ti-6Al-4Fe-0.25Si alloy was studied by EBSD and Vickers hardness.
In order to make a discrimination of oxygen content, grade 2 purity titanium and grade 4 purity titanium were selected. It was deformed to strain 10, 30, and 50% at room temperature by cold groove rolling. In each strain, the changes of grain size were analyzed quantitatively by EBSD. In addition, the plastic deformation behavior was studied by measuring Taylor factor and misorientation angle. As a result, grade 2 purity titanium was deformed with deformation twin, on the other hand grade 4 purity titanium was deformed with slip. Also, arrive at a conclusion through mechanical twin has a decisive effect on grain refinement. The grain size of grade 2 purity titanium was decreased to 35.0 μm from 85.3 μm of raw when it deformed 50%. In the case of grade 4 purity titanium, the grain size was decreased to 60.4 μm from 77.2 μm. The grain size reduction rates of each specimen were 58.9% and 21.7%. Also, yield strength reduction ratio of grade 4 purity titanium was low than grade 2 purity titanium.
Ti-6Al-4Fe-0.25Si alloy which was deformed to the thickness of 2.5mm by 880℃ hot-rolling was solution treated. 900℃ annealing and furnace cooling was progressed for stress relieving and coarsening of α phase, it was selected as initial microstructure. In order to set up the solution treatment temperature, β transformation temperature was calculated by Thermo-calc simulation, and it was calculated 940℃. Based on calculated β transformation temperature, β phase region was selected 1000℃ above 60℃ of β transformation temperature. Also, α+β phase region was selected 900℃ below 40℃ of β transformation temperature. In addition, 750℃ was selected, because it is considered below martensitic transformation temperature. After solution treatment samples were cooled under different condition of cooling rate; Water-quenching, air-cooling or furnace-cooling. The microstructure of each specimen was analyzed by SEM. The grain size and the fraction of α phase and β phase were analyzed quantitatively by EBSD. Through the Vickers hardness measurement, correlation of microstructure and mechanical property was understood. As a result, martensite and lamellar structure was developed which was solution treated in β phase region, and the slow cooling rate caused increase of thickness of acicular structure. In the case of water-quenching, α' martensite was developed in β matrix, and Vickers hardness was the highest. However, Vickers hardness was reduced with increasing of thickness of acicular structure in air-cooling and furnace cooling. On the other hand, in the case of solution treatment in α+β phase region, remaining α phase and β phase were coexisted. The highest Vickers hardness of this region was air-cooled specimen. In this case, the microstructure include remaining α and lamellar α phase in β matrix; bi-modal structure.
