The purpose of this research is to understand the significance of toddlers’ experiences with nursery rhymes. This research was conducted between July and December of 2013 and involved 12 toddlers in Green Sprout class as well as the author and Teacher K who co-teaches the class. During the 6 months of this research, toddlers and teachers sang the following nursery rhymes appropriate for toddler developments: Gonji Gonji, Jam Jam, Dori Dori, Chak Chak Goong, Ah Ham Ah Ham, Gil La Ja Bee Hwal Hwal. Between September and December of 2013, the toddlers sang traditional songs aligned with life themes of standard childcare curriculum which the researcher selected based on support materials. Participants singing nursery rhymes in daily routine were observed and video and audio recorded to best capture these moments. Collected data were transcribed immediately and verified by Teacher K and major professor who viewed video clips and listened to audio recordings. Upon verification, transcriptions were compared and reflective journal entries were written focusing on participants’ facial expression, gesture, and words. The face-to-face interview with Teacher K was used as reference data for this research. A summary of the findings of this research is as follows:
Experience with nursery rhymes for toddlers were “joy from repeat”, “control of mind”, and “excitement and comfort from rhythm”. First, the nursery rhymes experience provided pleasures from repeated singing. Toddlers playfully and repeatedly moved to easy lyrics of nursery rhymes, and the rhythmic lyrics added linguistic fun allowing toddlers to enjoy repeating the words. This stimulated the participating toddlers’ brain to aid with learning language and numbers as well as with growing creativity and imagination. Secondly, the participating toddlers experienced mind-control. Nursery rhymes served as a treat for extremely active toddlers to help focus on teachers and engage in activities. In addition, nursery rhymes were effective in naturally resolving dispute with friends without any mediation. Nursery rhymes provided comfort when teachers felt anxious or upset. Thirdly, toddlers’ experience with nursery rhymes provided comfort and excitement from rhythms. Simple and regular beats made toddlers feel comfortable allowing them to be calm and sleep well during naptime. Through dynamic and cheerful rhythm of nursery rhymes, toddlers danced and moved to the beats.
The results of this research suggest that toddlers’ brains are stimulated for physical, linguistic, social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral developments as well as help increase creativity and one’s ability to express musically. In addition, traditional children’s songs help shape toddlers to be well-rounded human beings to live in this world. Therefore, this research is significant in providing analysis of educational value of nursery rhymes singing experience among toddlers.
