In this study, a wrist-wearable biosignal monitoring system was developed for the purpose of personal health monitoring that can be used regardless of time and place. The effort for the individual's health can be reduced by wearing the wrist-wearable monitoring device since various biosignals can be monitored in real time without individual efforts to measure them. In this study, measured data were sent to the smartphone. Health data management on the spot was possible since all the biosignals were displayed on the smartphone screen. Furthermore, data transfer to a remote healthcare center or hospital can be easily performed by using the smartphone. In the previous studies, the miniaturization of monitoring systems have been accomplished aided by the development of electronic technologies. However, the preparation procedures such as the attachment of various sensors and cable connections were required and this caused inconvenience in using the health monitoring system. In this system, ECG, PPG, GSR, and skin temperature were measured and the monitoring system was weared on the wrist and the electrodes and sensors were automatically contacted on the skin without additional efforts.
Filtering was studied in order to reduce the waiting time for measuring biosignals and to minimize computational time. Unlike the previous studies, metal electrodes for ECG measurement were used instead of using Ag/AgCl disposable electrodes. Normally, the performance of disposable electrodes was better than the metal electrode. However, we adapted the metal electrode for two purposes; easy operation and continued usage. ECG was measured using various metal electrodes and their results were compared. The copper electrode had the lowest baseline drift. However, copper is susceptible to moisture and salt and the color changes as time passes. It was found that the titanium electrode had the smallest baseline drift among the metal electrodes without chemical changes. Because of the individual difference in biosignal amplitudes, a gain control algorithm was implemented. In order to increase the dynamic range of the output signal, GSR circuits were simulated and appropriate circuits were implemented. For skin temperature measurement, an accuracy of 0.08 % was achieved through temperature compensation processes.
All the measured data from the wrist-type biosignal monitor were sent to a smartphone through the wireless Bluetooth network. Analysis of biological signals, calculation of vital signs, and complicated operations such as digital signal processing and graphics were all done in the smartphone. The smartphone calculated BPM, PTT, HRV, Histogram, Power spectrum and others. A wrist-wearable biosignal monitoring system was developed and tested successfully.
