This study suggested a developed mentoring program as a involvement way for improving the mentally disabled child’s family function and psychosocial adaptation. This study tried to suggest an effective involvement way for improving the mentally disabled child’s family function and psychosocial adaptation in terms of social work’s practice ways by verifying the effects of developed mentoring program on improving the family function. Therefore, this study included the family function-relevant variables like the family adaptation, the family cohesion, the parents-child communication as the factors verifying the effects of mentoring program for improving the mentally disabled child’s family function and psychosocial adaptation, and also selected the psychosocial adaptation-relevant variables like the self-esteem and the school life adaptation.
The subjects were 14 mentally disabled children attending a mental-health improvement center, and they were divided into 8 ones in the experiment group and 6 ones in the control group. And the experiment group and the control group were given a pre test before initiating the developed mentoring program. For the experiment group, the mentoring program for family function improvement was carried out for 80~100 minutes every session for total sessions during the period of 4 weeks(twice by month). After carrying out the program for 10 sessions, this study verified how much the mentoring program for family function improvement was useful in the mentally disabled child’s improvement in family function family and psychosocial adaptation by verifying the change degrees between before and after carrying out the program for the experiment group and the control group. In order to identify the both groups’ changes between before and after carrying out the program, the both groups’ data were statistically analyzed in using the Wilcoxon’s signed-ranks test, and the following results were gotten.
First, the mentoring program for improving the mentally disabled child’s family function improved the variables of family adaptation, family cohesion and parents-child communication in the mentally disabled child’s family function domain, and these results were statistically significant.
Second, the mentoring program for improving the mentally disabled child’s family function improved the variables of self esteem and school life adaptation in the psychosocial adaptation domain, and these results were statistically significant.
Based on the above results, this study provided the following suggestions for effective utilization way of the developed mentoring program for improving the mentally disabled child’s family function and for future studies.
First, this study could identify some changes in the school life adaptation for mentally disabled children who have not gotten enough support and modeling role from their parents who were in the first relation with such children. Through the above results, this study recognized and that the developed mentoring program for improving the family function could influence on the mentally disabled child’s school life adaptation, and such improved adaptation could influence on the child’s family domain and school domain. Therefore recognizing such influences, a lot of programs should be developed and carried out.
Second, this study was a program to identify the effects of mentoring program for improving the mentally disabled child’s family function. So the participating targets were limited into the mentally disabled children and their parents, but it is good that future studies will plan to participate the all family members like the mentally disabled child’s family and his/her brother(s) & sister(s) and will improve the insufficient family functions and psychosocial adaptation for the whole family.
Third, this study was difficult in generalizing its results because the number of research targets was small. So it needs that future studies will complement this disadvantage by carrying out a developed mentoring program to a lot of people, and investigate the program’s effects.
Fourth, due to the characteristics of a mentoring program, the mentee is eventually influenced by the mentor. So the influences on the mentoring program will be varied depending on the mentor’s capability. Therefore, based on the long-term continual relation, it needs to establish an education and supervision system to give enough feedbacks to mentor about his/her difficulties from the partnership stage to the finish stage.
