The synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from ethylene carbonate (EC) is very attractive in terms of the reuse of carbon dioxide, because ethylene carbonate (EC) is synthesized from carbon dioxide and easily converted to DMC via transesterification. Owing to the high oxygen content, low toxicity, and high chemical stability, DMC is emerging as a substitute for phosgene and gasoline additives. In the present study, DMC was synthesized via transesterification of EC with methanol by using ionic liquids immobilized on mesoporous cellular foam (MCF) as a catalyst. Without a catalyst, DMC yield is low regardless of the reaction temperature, but improved up to around 80% with ionic liquid catalysts, such as 1,4-diazobicyclo[2.2.2] octane (DABCO) or 1,4-diazobicyclo[2.2.2] octane hydroxide ([DABCO]OH). However, ionic liquid catalysts are the same phase with the product, so there are some problems of catalyst separation and their reuse. The immobilization of ionic liquids on mesoporous cellular foam (MCF) may be a solution to solve the problems. MCF was prepared and characterized by a surface area analyzer, transmittance electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). From the characterizations, it was proved that MCF has three dimensional spherical cell structure with 34 nm in cell diameter and 21.3 nm in window diameter. Among the homogeneous catalysts used, DABCO showed the highest DMC yield around 84%, and among the heterogeneous catalysts, [DABCO]OH@MCF ([DABCO]OH chemically immobilized on MCF) showed the highest DMC yield around 74%. In the reusability test of the used catalysts, there was only 10% point decrease in DMC yield with [DABCO]OH@MCF, whereas 60% point decrease in DMC yield with DABCO/MCF (DABCO impregnated on MCF), after four times recycling test. From this result, it was found that [DABCO]OH was stably immobilized on MCF and the immobilized catalyst was possible to reuse the used catalyst. It provides a possibility of using this technique in various industrial applications. The effect of anions, such as OH- and Cl-, on the catalytic activity was also investigated. The catalyst having OH- anion showed 58% point higher DMC yield than the one having Cl- anion. From this result, it was found that anions affect the catalytic activity and the selection of anion is important in this reaction system. The optimum reaction conditions for DMC synthesis were also investigated with [DABCO]OH@MCF catalyst.
