기존의 SOFC(Solid oxide fuel cell)는 주로 산소이온 전도성 세라믹을 기반으로 연구되었다.

Almost of studies on SOFCs (Solid oxide fuel cells) are mainly based on oxygen ion conducting ceramics. However, the operating temperature of SOFC using the oxygen ion conductor is over 800℃ in order to get a high power density, but such high operating temperature makes the poor long-term stability. Thus, for SOFC’s commercializations, the operating temperature should decrease from 800℃ to an intermediate temperature, about 500℃. In order to get a good performance from the intermediate temperature SOFC (IT-SOFC), both of the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte and the electrode performance should be improved. One of promising candidates for the IT-SOFC is a protonic ceramic fuel cell (PCFC). Protonic ceramics which can conduct the proton through the lattice were known to have higher ionic conductivity at intermediate temperature compared to the oxygen ion conducting oxides. In this study, the composite electrodes for the PCFC were fabricated by infiltrating the active electrode materials such as (La0.8Sr0.2)FeO3-δ (LSF) cathode and (La0.7Sr0.3)V0.90O3-δ (LSV) anode into a porous protonic ceramic scaffold composed of Ba(Ce0.51Zr0.30Y0.15Zn0.04)O3-δ (BCZY-Zn). And nano-sized catalysts such as Pd and CeO2 were also added into the composite anode to enhance the electrode performance. In the same way, the oxygen ion conducting fuel cells with the yttria-stabilized zirconia as an electrolyte (YSZ cell) were also fabricated. And cell performances were measured at the different temperatures from 700℃ to 500℃. In the whole temperature ranges, the electrode performances of PCFC were much higher than those of YSZ cells. This shows that the protonic cermics can improve the electrode performance as well as reducing the resistance of electrolyte.
