The purpose of this study is to develop the various art programs for young children at ages of 4-5 to freely express their thoughts and feelings through activities of masterpiece appreciation. We set a couple of questions to develop the art programs for young children through masterpiece appreciation as follows. 1. Which masterpieces willbe selected? 2. How are art activities expressedafter masterpiece appreciation? How will you perform the follow-up activities? For selection of masterpieces to be used to develop the art programs, we considered the children's nature in which they preferred clear and realistic arts to the vague and abstract expression. Thus, we were focused on selection of masterpieces appropriate for appreciation of arts because basic factors of arts are clearly represented. In this study, subjects were 20 children at ages of 4-5 in G art academy located in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province and 10 children at ages of 4-5 in G art academy located in Gyeyang- Gu, Incheon. Our study was conducted on the basis of advices from one teacher with 2〇-year teaching experience and two teachers with more than l0-year teaching experience in both G art academies. Even though art academies were located in different locations, these art academies had some things in common as follows. Art classes were being given with focus on expression in G art academies. Appreciation activities were performed once one masterpiece was selected every month. The same teacher proceeded with art classes. After masterpiece appreciation was finished every month, the masterpiece and other art works were put up in the appreciation section or exhibited at the corner of the classroom. Children always could appreciate them and talk about them. After six activities of appreciation were finished, they proceeded with follow-up activities through quiz games. Young children should be provided with helps to express their thoughts and feelings by understanding aesthetic factors in arts, appreciating art works as interrelated and continued processes and expressing art activities. Proper role of teachers is a very important factor for a good class for masterpiece appreciation. Since young children understand the contents contained in art works and express them in art through masterpiece appreciation, it is not separated from expression activities but it becomes the medium for various activities of art expression. Thus, it provides various subjects for creative activities. As young children naturally face masterpieces which are beautiful subjects through this method, they will get a positive effect on expression of their thoughts and experience in daily lives. Masterpiece appreciation provides young children with the process of insight to feel internal values and read historical background, flow and emotions through seeing, perceiving and feeling famous pictures with high quality which everyone likes. In conclusion, since masterpiece appreciation provides young children with pleasure of art activities and new expression, helps them to have interests in art activities and learn artistic concept, aesthetic factors, historical background and psychological conditions of artists, and lets them freely express their thoughts and emotions, young children's art activities through masterpiece appreciation will be an important medium.
