With increase in global demand for energy, power plant capacities have increased, with correspondingly larger intake pipelines for cooling. Recently, uses of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes have increased for various intake pipes. In installation of HDPE pipes, floatation and sinking method is commonly applied. As the density of HDPE pipe is less than that of seawater, concrete collars are attached to HDPE pipes for submersion to the seabed. During installation, both the HDPE pipe and collar must resist environmental loads due to wind, wave and current. Concrete collar designs should consider weight, shape, dimension, spacing and connection methods. In this study, the effects of varying thickness, width and spacing of concrete collars on HDPE pipe installation have been investigated. For installation of HDPE pipe by floatation and sinking method, internal air pressure, tension during submersion and sinking velocity are key control parameters. In this study, effects of tension were analyzed, and possible tension ranges were defined for selected conditions. Results show influence of collar dimensions as insignificant, and that HDPE pipe with air filling rate of 20% cannot be installed depths greater than 13 m. The use of large diameter HDPE pipe for sea water intake facilities will continue to increase, and findings of this study may aid engineers in design of concrete collar and selection tension range during submersion.
