(135Cs : 2x106 yrs; 137Cs : 30.17 yrs).

The aim of the present investigation is to utilize the activated sericite in the attenuation of radio toxic cesium from aqueous solutions. Further, the material is assessed for its suitability in the modification of carbon paste electrode and employed as working electrode in cyclic voltammetry (CV) for the determination of trace level of radiotoxic cesium in the aqueous media. Cesium is considered as the most abundant and hazardous radio toxic pollutant in liquid radioactive waste. The 235uranium operated reactors produce a high yield of 135Cs and 137Cs fission products which are highly radiotoxic and having long half-lives (135Cs : 2x106 yrs; 137Cs : 30.17yrs). 135Cs is one of most harmful elements having long half-life and mobility in the repository. On the other hand, 137Cs is found to be a major contributor to heat and radiation generation in the high-level radioactive waste. Moreover, because of hard -emitting source it has greater concern in the spent fuel. Due to long half-life, unlimited solubility and persistency, Cs tends to remain in the environment for several decades posing ecosystem hazard. Owing to its similar chemical characteristics with potassium, it easily replaces potassium and incorporated to terrestrial and aquatic organisms make it a potential radio toxic pollutant in the aquatic environment. In case of ingestion and accumulation; cesium is deposited in the soft tissues of the body and creating an internal hazard such as thyroid cancer. Therefore, the remediation and low level detection of radiocesium is an important radiological input. Sericite, a mica based natural clay is annealed at 800 ℃ for 4 hrs followed by acid activation using 3.0 mol/L of HCl at 100 ℃ for 1 hr to obtain the activated sericite. The solid samples were characterized by SEM-EDX, FT-IR and BET specific surface area analyzer. The surface morphology of sericite showed a compact layer structures whereas the activated sericite possessed a very disorder and heterogeneous surface structure. The EDX mapping has shown that the elements such as Si, Al, and O are the major constituents and the other elements C, Mg, Na, and K were obtained in lesser amounts from both the sericite as well as activated sericite. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area results indicate a significant increase in the surface area due to the activation of sericite. The batch reactor data collected for various parametric studies enabled that an increase in pH (from 2.0 to 8.0) and sorbate concentrations (from 10.0 to 100.0 mg/L) apparently favoured the attenuation of Cs(I). The time dependence sorption data showed that the uptake of Cs(I) is very rapid and within just 50 minutes of contact the uptake of Cs(I) achieves its saturation value. The kinetic modelling showed that the uptake follows a pseudo-second-order rate equation hence, the attenuation capacity of these solids for Cs(I) is estimated to be 0.858 and 4.353 mg/g respectively for S and AS solids. The adsorption isotherm modelling data inferred the Freundlich fitting rather the Langmuir adsorption isotherms. The effect of background electrolyte concentrations (0.001 to 0.1 mol/L) using the electrolyte Mg(NO3)2 indicated that the presence of this electrolyte could not affect significantly the percent removal of Cs(I) by AS. Further, the fixed bed column reactor operations are performed to obtain the breakthrough data. The breakthrough data is fitted well to non-linear Thomas equation. Therefore, the loading capacity was estimated to be 1.585 mg/g at the initial influent Cs(I) concentration 30.0 mg/L at pH 5.0. Electrochemical behaviour of Cs(I) is obtained for a wide range of applied potential ±1.5 V against the standard Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The activated sericite carbon paste electrode (AS-CPE) showed a good tendency to Cs(I) ions and the presence of same amount of other metal ions could not hamper the detection of Cs(I). The presence of Na+ ions upto 5 mg/L could not significantly affect the determination of Cs(I), however the presence of excess Na+ ions in solution inhibit the detection of Cs(I) completely. Under the optimum conditions, a linear relationship is obtained between the scan rate and the cathodic peak current and moreover, fairly linear correlation was obtained in the concentration range of 10 ug/L to 50 ug/L with the correlation coefficients of 0.99 in the cathodic potential with the scan rate 200 mV/sec. A newly developed sensor shows a detection limit upto 1 ug/L of Cs(I).
