Unique physicochemical properties of nanoparticles give them the potential to be applied in many new and exciting areas. Especially, silver nanoparticles are courting applications in many fields, due to their high optical and electrical stabilities, such as catalysis, biological and chemical sensing, electronics and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In this work, a rapid and detailed controlling the shapes of AgNPs by chemical oxidation and reduction was studied. The shape of metallic nanoparticles used in colorimetric detection using the unique optical properties of plasmonic nanoparticles were almost spherical. However, in this work, a highly sensitive colorimetric sensing platform for the selective trace analysis for Co2+ ions was reported, based on glutathione (GSH) modified unisotropic metallic nanoparticles. GSH-AgNP with spherical and plate shape shows a high sensitivity for all of the metal ions (Ni2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, and As3+), but poor selective recognition for target metal ions. Whereas, rod-type GSH-AgNP has a special response to Co2+. To improve chemical stability of Ag nanoprism at low pH, Au/Ag bimetallic nanoframe was prepared through self-assembly of gold ions on partially oxidized silver nanoprisms by galvanic replacement reaction. As a results, Co^2+ ion could be selectively recognized using Au/Ag bimetallic nanoframe. The results can be applied to preparation and shape control of nanoparticles and used as a basis data for research of property of nanoparticles.
