This study theoretically organized the book binding methods by the form of books as well as investigated the formative flow of old and rare books of the Orient by time period and the evolution of book designing and binding system to contribute to the restoration of Korean traditional culture. The formative characteristics of old and rare books, changes in the book designing and binding system, and the characteristics of traditional book designing and binding techniques in this study were as follows. (1) The turtle shells and bones engraved with letters and the copper objects engraved with letters were not considered to be types of document made by formal book designing and binding system, whereas the bamboo books, the wooden tablet books, and the silk books were considered to be the beginning of the book designing and binding system. The book designing and binding system has been diversified since the invention of paper. (2) The bamboo books and the wooden tablet books were bound with leather straps or strings, whereas the distribution of silk books and the invention of paper diversified the book designing and binding technique. (3) The order of changes in the book designing and binding technique after the appearance of silk books and paper books is Gwonchukjang(卷軸裝: Scroll) - Seonpungjang(旋風裝: Accordion-Fold Binding) - Hojeopjang(蝴蝶裝: Butterfly-Fold Binding) - Pobaejang(包背裝: Wrapped Back Binding) - Seonjang(線裝: Tread Binding). Seonjang, the latest binding technique to put the front cover and back cover to the front and back of a book, bind them all together with a thread, and create a very strong and not easily damaged back cover, has been widely used even in the modern society. (4) The rare and old books had used silk, hemp cloth, and water caltrop flower patterned paper for their covers; in particular, the covers of Korean old and rare books were made of water caltrop flower patterned paper. The water caltrop flower patterned paper was created by putting a multi-layered paper on a waxed water caltrop flower patterned plate and printing the patterns with a pushing stone. In other words, the production of water caltrop flower patterned paper required a water caltrop flower patterned plate, wax, a pushing stone, and a multi-layered paper in color. (5) This bibliographic study investigated the formative flow of Korean old and rare books by their changes, considered the Korean traditional book designing and binding system including Gwonchukjang, Seonpungjang, Hojeopjang, Pobaejang, and Seonjang, and described the details of book designing and binding techniques based on the existing relics. In particular, this study reenacted and demonstrated the book designing and binding techniques of each type of book to understand not only the formative characteristics but also the processes of production, and described the theorized traditional book designing and binding techniques by the development stage of book designing and binding techniques of Korean traditional books. The author of this study hope to restore the Korean traditional book designing and binding techniques, establish the scientific ground, and transform the Korean traditional culture into the international culture based on the restoration of book designing and binding culture and the establishment of theories about the book designing and binding techniques by form.
