A Comparison Study on the Water Pipe Exploration Using the Ground Penetrating Radar and Electro-magnetic Induction원문보기

Recently, ground subsidences are frequently occurred and cause many safety accidents on a national scale. Due to the accidents, the interest on the safety issues related to the ground is growing. The main reasons for the safety accidents are water leak from the aged water pipe and drain pipe, poor refilling after the burring the underground facility, and poor underground excavation in subway construction. Among them, the ground hollowization of the water leakage from the pipes has the highest potential risk. To reduce the risks and systematically manage the aging pipes, the information on the underground pipes should be established. Until now, however, the study on the optimal methodology on detecting the aging underground facilities is not performed. In this study, optimal underground pipe exploration methods based on the types of the pipe (metal and non-metal); the surface material (asphalt, concrete, unpaved); and size of the pipe (small and medium) are analyzed. Total 27 cases are tested and the results are compared to the coordinates from the direct surveying conducted before laying the pipes. To detect the pipes, Ground Penetrating Radar and Electro-Magnetic induction methods are applied. The results from the tests on the 27 cases shows that the GPR is the best method to detect the metal pipe laid under asphalt. GPR also detects the metal and non-metal pipes laid under unpaved surface to some degrees but it shows the poor performance on detecting the medium and small size pipes laid under concrete. The non-metal pipes are not detected from the EM induction, and the medium and small size pipes under unpaved surface are well detected. It also detects the pipes under asphalt to some degree. It is expected that the results from this study contribute greatly to acquire the position of the underground pipes by properly applying the GPR and EM induction, thus the aging pipes are efficiently managed. Keywords : Underground Facilities, Electromagnetic induction method, GPR(Ground Penetrating Radar)
