A porous material which has the gas pockets inside, unlike bulk materials, can be classified into two structures, open- and closed-cell foams. Due to these distinctive structural feature, porous materials can be used in a wide range of applications from environmental industry (ultra high temperature filter and an purification filter), impact absorbing material, heat exchanger, water-purifying and desalination equipment, backing material, interior / exterior material, medical and health field (implant surgery, an artificial hip joint) to energy sector. In particular, the porous metal has a larger surface area and is much lighter than bulk materials. Furthermore, it has high strength per weight, good thermoelectric conductivity, impact absorption, sound absorption, and low elastic modulus. This study investigates porous titanium, which is made of micrometer-scale fine pores and can thus be suitable for the field of energy electrodes. Titanium can possess the same level of strength with the half weight compared to steel and has an exceptional corrosion resistance by making passive film at room temperature. To fabricate the porous titanium for this study, we use freeze-casting process because it is highly affordable and is easy to make large-area samples for easy scale-up. For the application to the energy field, controlling the size, distribution, and percentage of pore is highly crucial. By adjusting those variables, it is possible to create adequate Ti foams with large surface area. In this study, we also observe the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti and Ti-5W alloy foams made by freeze-casting process. In particular, the role of W is analyzed to understand the effect of W in the matrix of Ti and the positive mechanical properties due to the presence of W by using nano-indentation and compressive tests. For the application study of Ti foams created in this study, Ti foam is applied as anode gas diffusion layer (GDL) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), because Ti foam having the structure of many fine pores can achieve can simply replace the current carbon-based GDL. Ti foam has inherent metallic properties and hence, has superior conductivity to carbon-based GDL. We believe that this study suggests profound implications in the commercialization of PEMFCs, because the metallic Ti foam provides a longer-term reliability and chemical stability. Also by forming anatase TiO2 on the surface of Ti foam, it is applied as the anode of a Li-ion battery. Here, the Ti foam acts as the current collector with a large surface area and the TiO2 the active anode material. Compared to the current carbon-based anode materials, TiO2 does not have distinctive capacity advantage against them. However, it is known to have very stable and safe cycling properties, because of its small volume expansion during the cycling process. In summary, this study investigates the processing and potential application possibilities of Ti foams to energy electrode area. The fabrication of Ti foam is successfully achieved by freeze-casting process. In particular, the mechanical properties of Ti and Ti-5W alloy foams are examined and compared. For the applications of energy electrodes, a variety of electrochemical analysis and performance tests are carried out on Ti foam, which prove that Ti foam can be successfully applied for the anode of both PEMFC and Li-ion battery.
