The purpose of this study is to investigate if distributions of tense and aspect in Korean high school English textbooks reflect those of real English. The frequencies of tense and aspect were derived from the bodies of six English textbooks in high school and Ame06 corpus. The analysis results of LSWE corpus were used for reference data. According to recent English scholars, tense was categorized into present tense and past tense, and aspect was classified by simple aspects, progressive aspects, perfect aspects and perfect progressive aspects. In the case of English textbooks, verbs of each type were counted by marking on the texts directly. As the criteria of analysis, all of the finite verbs were included while the non-finite verbs and modal auxiliaries were excluded. However, the frequencies of the modal auxiliaries were showed separately in the tables and pictures of results for just reference. In Ame06, an analytical program‘Antconc’was used for deriving the frequencies of tense and aspect, with the same criteria of analysis for the textbooks. The distributions of English textbooks were compared with Ame06, first in all the texts, then according to each pattern. The patterns of texts were categorized into prose and fiction according to the English textbooks. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, as a result of the tense analysis in all the texts, the present tense rate of Ame06 was higher than that of textbooks, while in the past tense, the rate in textbooks was higher than found in Ame06. However, the gap of the rate was not large. The rate of aspects in all the texts was analogous in all the types of aspects as well. As a result of the Chi-square analysis on tenses and aspects in all the texts, it was concluded that there was no statistical significance between the two groups. Second, as seen from the results of the analysis of tenses in prose, the rate of Ame06 was higher than textbooks in present tense, while textbooks was higher than Ame06 in past tense. From the result of aspect in prose, it was discovered that the rate of Ame06 was higher than textbooks in progressive aspects and that Ame06 was higher than textbooks in perfect aspects, but the gap of the rate was very small. In the pattern of fiction in tense, it was proven that the distribution of present tense was lower than that of past tense in both groups, which was equal to the result of LSWE. The gap of the rate between the two groups was small. From the comparison between aspects in fiction, it was identified that the rate of textbooks was higher than Ame06 in simple aspects and that Ame06 was higher than textbooks in perfect aspects, which was identical with the consequence of LSWE. As a result of the Chi-square analysis on prose and fiction, statistical significance between two groups was not presented. Consequently, it turned out that the distributions of tenses and aspects in Korean high school English textbooks do reflect well upon those actually used in English.
