In South Korea, contemporary architectural planning began in the 1960s, before when there had been not many architectural activities around the nation due to cultural severance by the ruling Japanese even after Liberation in 1945 and economic hardship following the Korean War that broke out in 1950. If there had been some architectural activities, it was difficult to consider them as pure Korean architectural activities.
The South Korean architectural community started to make an inquiry into architectural expressions as a base of expressive means for national and regional characteristics in the early 1960s and have demands for traditional expressions along with the diversified social needs in the latter part of the 1960s, causing disputes over how to inherit traditional architecture. Entering the 1970s, it developed into mature contemporary architecture in the coexistence of modern and contemporary architectural patterns and eclectic patterns to accept the traditions. In the early 1980s, the architectural activities were in recession owing to the political confusion. As the nation hosted the Seoul Asian Games in 1986 and the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988, there were active plans for large-scale additional facilities for the games including sports, culture, and gathering facilities along with the rising interest in urban planning. Since then, the design technologies of South Korea began to make rapid development with a new approach of addressing the themes of traditional Korean architecture emerging to promote the further development of South Korean architectural culture. Interest was shown in the cultural activities of the third world and the local and folksy culture of each country in the trends of global culture. Under those influences, the South Korean architectural community engaged in active creations of contemporary architecture and reached the global level of architectural production abilities in the 1990s, sparking full-blown discussions about the globalization of traditional Korean architecture once again under the banner of "globalization of architectural culture."
This study analyzed contemporary architectural works to which the elements of traditional Korean architecture were applied in the nation to figure out how the architects applied and utilized those elements and conducted a survey by selecting works to represent each type. The survey gathered information about recognition, preference, and opinions about application plans from the general public, specialists, and experts, tracking the changing patterns of recognition and preference through comparison and analysis with the research conducted in 2008. The study also examined application plans for the elements of traditional foreign architecture and searched for ways to apply the traditional architectural elements to the contemporary architectural design of South Korea.
Chapter 2 reviewed the expressions of traditional architecture, expressive trends of traditional architecture in contemporary South Korean architecture, cases home and abroad, and previous studies through theoretical considerations.
Chapter 3 selected works that applied the traditional architectural elements to their design intentions among the ones published in Architects by the Korea Institute of Registered Architects, analyzing and categorizing them.
Chapter 4 selected works to represent each type among the ones selected in Chapter 3 and conducted a survey on recognition, preference, and application plans with the general public, specialists, and experts. The chapter also examined the changing patterns of recognition and preference for the traditional architectural elements through comparison and analysis with the research conducted in 2008 and then analyzed application plans for traditional architecture.
The findings led to the following conclusions:
1. Analysis of Subject Work
‣ The traditional architectural elements continued to be applied to contemporary architectural works from the 1960s to the 2000s.
‣ As for the regional distribution of works to which the traditional architectural elements were applied, Seoul had the biggest number of them, being followed by Gyeonggi, Gyeongsangbuk, Gangwon, Chungcheongnam, and Jeollanam Province in the order. Their uses were mainly cultural and gathering, residential, office, educational, and religious facilities.
‣ While the national facility buildings applied the forms and materials of traditional architecture to express locality, traditionality and symbolicity, private buildings applied the spaces and ideas of traditional architecture in many cases.
2. Analysis of Application by the Types
‣ The applications of form elements made a rapid increase from 1960 to the 1980s and decreased a little bit in the 1990s with those elements consistently applied to architecture until the present and accordingly considered as representative elements in the expressions of traditional architecture. There were many copy-type works in the 1960s, eclectic works in the 1970s and 1980s, and abstract works from the 1990s through 2000s to the present. The application frequency of those elements was high in the roofs/eaves, columns, cornerstones/stylobates, and walls.
‣ The full-blown application of spatial elements began in the 1970s. Those elements have continued to be applied and been applied most since the 2000s. Their detailed elements include layouts, floors/main floored rooms, yards, and traditional space construction methods. The traditional architectural elements were applied to public spaces in buildings.
‣ The application of ideological elements began in the 1970s and has continued to increase until the present. Of their detailed elements, borrowed scenery, feng shui/Yangtaek, yin and yang, and traditional philosophy were most applied. Buildings' relations with the outside seem to have been applied to design rather than their relations with the inside.
‣ The application of materials elements started in the 1960s, continued to rise until the 1990s, and began to drop in the 2000s. Of their detailed elements, roof tiles, wooden materials, stone materials, and Hanshikmun were most applied. As the roofs/eaves elements were most applied among the form elements, the roof tiles elements were most applied among the material elements, which suggests that the roofs are considered as one of the most characteristic features of traditional Korean architecture.
‣ The form and materials elements were most used among the traditional architectural elements from the 1960s through the 2000s to the present. The number of their applications either decreased or slowed down since the 1990s. The spatial and ideological elements, on the other hand, have continued to increase, which hints at a shift from the exterior-based embodiment of traditional architecture to the content-based embodiment.
The changing patterns of recognition and preference were analyzed based on "A Study on Preference for the Traditional Architectural Elements in Contemporary Architectural Works of South Korea" conducted in 2008 and the findings of study conducted in 2014.
1. Changing Patterns of Recognition
‣ The degree of recognition rose sharply in copy-type works, and the recognition of material type was particularly high. The survey results from the general public, specialists, and experts show that the recognition level was the lowest among the experts.
‣ The degree of recognition applied to eclectic works generally dropped. The findings of 2014 research revealed that it was a little high in the eclectic type and low in the abstract type. The experts had a higher recognition of abstract type than the general public and a lower recognition of the type than the specialists, recording the lowest recognition in the eclectic type.
‣ The degree of recognition dropped in the abstract type. The findings of 2008 study show that the specialists had a high degree of recognition, and those of 2014 research indicate that it was low all across the general public, specialists, and experts.
‣ The recognition of works to which the traditional architectural elements were applied rose in the copy type and dropped in the eclectic and abstract type. The experts recorded the lowest level of recognition.
2. Changing Patterns of Preference
‣ Preference for the copy type increased. Preference dropped among the specialists in the 2008 study and recorded the highest level among them in the 2014 study.
‣ Preference for the eclectic type did not go through many changes. In the 2008 study, 44.5% made positive responses to it. The number was 44.2% in the 2014 study with few changes.
‣ Preference for the abstract type dropped in general, which is because the preference of specialists was considerably low. In the 2014 study, preference decreased in the spatial type and increased in the ideological type. The experts recorded the lowest level of preference for the abstract type.
‣ Preference for works to which the traditional architectural elements were applied increased in the copy type, showed few changes in the eclectic type, and decreased in the spatial type and increased in the ideological type under the abstract category. The experts had the lowest degree of preference for the traditional architectural elements.
Based on the studies of 2008 and 2014, the present study conducted a recognition and preference survey and found that recognition and preference for the copy type rose and that recognition and preference for the eclectic and abstract type dropped among the general public and specialists. It reflects the recognition of form elements and the lack of recognition of content elements and should be simply regarded as an issue of insufficient understanding of traditional architectural culture rather than the issue of decreasing recognition and preference. The recognition and preference for architects was low, which is a negative aspect to establish the identity of South Korean architecture.
The biggest obstacle to the application of traditional architectural elements is a lack of understanding of traditional architecture.
The present study thus proposed the following application plans for the traditional architectural elements of Korea:
‣ Establishing pride in the traditional architecture of Korea.
‣ Understanding the traditional architectural culture of Korea.
‣ Improving education for the traditional architecture of Korea.
Once those fundamental contents are prioritized and consolidated, the following efforts should be made:
‣ Interpreting the traditional architectural elements in various ways.
‣ Interpreting and applying the traditional architectural elements in specific ways.
‣ Conducting ongoing researches on the traditional architectural elements.
‣ Universalizing the traditional architectural elements.
Those processes of application plans should proceed to establish the identity of traditional Korean architecture and also find ways to apply the traditional architectural elements to contemporary architectural works of South Korea. A new transition period seems to be in need in the application of traditional architectural elements.
