The purpose of this study was to suggest a teaching method of music composition for high school 1st graders to which Bruner’s theory of representation was applied. Bruner’s theory of representation, which was utilized in this research, helps a gradual understanding of knowledge through three stages: experience by movement (activity), experience (media) by concrete images (visualization), and experience by symbols (signs). The results of the actual teaching are as follows. First, the teaching plan for music composition class with the application of Bruner’s theory of representation was proved to have an effect on drawing students’ active participation and interest in the music composition class by providing learning experiences in the order of the representational stages (enactive, iconic, and symbolic representation). Secondly, the teaching plan for music composition class with the application of Bruner’s theory of representation appeared to have a great effect for students to understand the contents of the class by naturally connecting comprehension and activities. Thirdly, the teaching plan for music composition class with the application of Bruner’s theory of representation was also effective in enhancing the efficiency of learning and in increasing the satisfaction of the learners. It is expected that, besides this research which was on composition, more and more teaching methods dealing with a variety of materials will be developed and that effective teaching methods of singing, instrumental music, and appreciation to which the theory of representation is applied will be further researched afterwards.
