'Narcissism' was first defined by Freud(1913), a psychoanalyst, as a term to indicate the excessive self love out of the exaggeration of the importance of Ego. Lasch(1979), a sociologist, asserts that, because of the huge administrative organizations produced while the society is excessively organized, the way of thinking for survival arises, families are disintegrated, and narcissism is promoted, which means general conditions of the society instigate the narcissistic features more or less shared by its members. The reasons why the researches or writings should be more actively pursed for the study and understanding of narcissism and its features are that the developments of industrialization and capitalism let the society move toward the one where narcissistic individuals become famous and acquire power, and such a society in turn lets the individuals intensify their narcissistic characteristics. In the scope of art therapy, a study of narcissism can show significant meanings and influences, while providing the experiences of the relationship of transference and counter-transference among therapists and clients, and also the object experiences of narcissistic needs. So far, however, few qualitative case studies of art therapy have been conducted. This study approached overt narcissism with the qualitative case study method, analyzed the narcissistic characteristics from the viewpoints of self psychology, looked into narcissism through therapeutic interventions, and presented the conclusions. Thus through the self psychological art therapy for K with overt narcissism, it intended to search for the narcissistic characteristics and meanings and understand the values and natures of self psychological art therapy, along with the roles of therapists. K, the study's participant, a male adolescent in his 20s, took part in the study out of the conflicts of, and interest in, his own overt narcissistic personality. The study data were collected during the course of art therapy from the psychological viewpoints, which were carried out from July 2012 until April 2013, and they were used as the basic data for the analysis of narcissism. The data analysis for narcissism followed the 5-stage circular procedures of Yin(2009), gathering, classifying, and re-arranging of the data, interpreting the data, and concluding. The collected data were sorted out into 28 themes relating to emotions and behavioral expressions representing K's narcissistic characteristics. Applying these themes, K's overt narcissistic characteristics were classified into four factors, and seven themes each for the individual factors were re-arranged. The four factors of K's overt narcissism, derived in the study, were summarized as 'exaggerated self-consciousness,' 'endless self-display,' 'arrogant sense of privilege,' and 'lack of sympathy.' Accordingly, the study was able to present significant results concerning the narcissistic characteristics and values of art therapy through self psychological art therapy toward the adolescent with overt narcissistic tendencies. First, the self psychological art therapy enabled the overtly narcissistic K to search for his exaggerated self-consciousness appeared as his narcissistic characteristics, thereby looking into the true images of his, and to think of his practices of objectively recognizable abilities as the healthy concept of himself. He was able to internalize his real self-esteem by searching for the endless self-display. The searching for his arrogant sense of privilege allowed him to analyze his narcissistic needs to undervalue and feel jealous of others' abilities, thereby forming the healthy concept of self object. The deep understanding of the lack of sympathy allowed him to experience the therapeutic transference relationship and to be aware that the well-established sympathy plays a critical role in communication. Second, the self psychological art therapy enabled the overtly narcissistic K to express conflicts and troubles through artworks, and to be provided with important opportunities for positively expressing the ideal narcissism through experiencing creativeness and various object satisfaction as the cultural self object. Third, the self psychological art therapy allowed the overtly narcissistic K for therapists to maintain the therapeutic transference relationship, thereby resulting in the restructuring of narcissistic characteristics as a positive experience concerning sympathetic tolerance relationship through mirroring, leading to forming the transmuting internalization. In addition, the interventions and roles of therapists allowed K to experience the optimum frustration, unexperienced during his younger days, thereby to overcome his exaggerated self image, and to internalize the realistic self-consciousness through sympathizing with others for gaining his own recognition. The significance of the study can be considered to be relevant in that the narcissistic characteristics and the values of art therapy were found out through self psychological art therapy. Through the experiences available with art therapy, K was able to have a deep insight into the processes of feeling anger toward those who would not recognize him, followed by his excessive disappointment, and to accept it as the attitude for a successful life he wished to live, to give credits for his friends who were better than himself, rather than feeling jealous of them, while sincerely improving his own skills. In addition, a deep sense of sympathy was further expanded through the attitudes of empathy and interacting of interpersonal relationship. In this respect, it is expected that the self psychological art therapy can appropriately apply therapeutic interventions and narcissistic characteristics for clients with narcissistic tendencies, while it can provide the basic data for the art therapy from the self psychological viewpoints, capable of cultural object experiences, as well as a clue t
