라이언(T.A Ryan)과 C.B. (Speed of perception as a function of mode of presentation)’라는 논문에서는 사진, 그림자를 강조한 일러스트, 선화의 세 가지 기법 중에서 스케치와 선화가 가장 인식하기가 쉽다는 것을 검증했다.

We live in the era of data flood - an era of big data, in which hundreds and thousands of data are poured out. The emergence of new information distribution channels centering on the digital media and smart technology led an immeasurable increase of information that we need to digest; we have entered the big data era, where the amount of digital information worldwide is reported as large as 2.8ZB (as of 2012). In this era of information overflow, having the information consumers to digest an increased amount of information, infographics began to receive the spotlight as a new information communication system while the impact of text-focused content has deteriorated. The change of the media paradigm placed infographics as a medium in converting the preexisted information conveyance media to a means of proactive communication for information consumers. Infographics are diversely applied in various fields, including media, education and public institutions. However, it is particularly utilized in the IT industry in facilitating fast communication between information and information consumers. The demand of infographics has been increasing for facilitating the consumers’ memorization. There has been numerous literature reviews and researches on the expressive methodologies in terms of visualization. By studying the impact of infographics on the perceptions of consumers, this study focuses on improving the usage of infographics as a more appealing and effective communication means for assisting consumers remembering information. This study conducts a literature review on international and South Korea’s scholarly articles on a broad concept of infographics - information visualization methods of information design - to study theoretical methods for amplifying the consumers’ recognition ability. It is important to visualize information because a big portion of a human sensory receptors, approximately a 70 percent of sensory receptors of a human utilizes and depends on visual stimuli for perceiving information. In order to visualize information, information contents must be re-constructed into a visual structure that correspond to a consumer’s recognition structure for facilitating one’s understanding. In this case, formative components are applied to build the visual organization for information consumers. According to the research of Robert Horn, a professor at Stanford University, readers remember approximately 89 percent of information, if the information contains images. Since infographics provide such effect and prolong the memorization of information consumers, the IT industry utilizes and pay more attention to infographics. In 2013, the Visual Computing Group of Harvard University proved the interconnection between comprehension and memorization in terms of the human recognition. This research discovers that a usage of seven colors in visualization is the most effective in memorization compared to using one-color, black and white, or two to six colors. Further, through a thesis titled “Speed of perception as a function of mode of presentation” in 1956, a psychologist, T.A. Ryan and C.B. Schwartz verified that sketches and line-drawings are the most effective for the human perception among an option of a picture, line-drawing, and illustration with an articulated shadow effect. As shown in the studies above, the researches examining the degree of comprehension and memorization directly analyze them in terms of the psychology of the human perception. Therefore, going beyond our dependence on designers’ intuition, it is important to understand consumers for information visualization. Particularly along with the information technology development, in order to effectively visualize information that is to be displayed on various machines, from a 110 inch-large media wall to 2 inches-small smart watch, infographic methods are becoming more diversified. In optimizing the infographics on a media wall, the information must be planned and constructed after we sufficiently understand the interaction characteristics of machines and human. Likewise, on a two inch ultrasmall smart watch, it is important to consolidate and logically display the information on a dynamic screen. As new technologies are more integrated with an increasing amount of information, information expression methods focus on making the information more concise. This study proposes an analytical method to understand visual perception systems for improving the effectiveness of infographic applications as a new communication means, thus, the efficiency of information communication in the era of big data. Further, by understanding how the consumers perceive and process information, this study contributes to the IT industry producing infographics in a way that improves the memorization of information consumers.
