Since 1970s with the development of medical technology, nutrition and hygiene the aging population worldwide is increasing. This includes Korea, where in 2009 over 10% of the population was 65 years an above turning into an aging society, it is estimated that by 2018 Korea will be an aging society and by 2026 a super-aged society. Because this is at a very fast rate in comparison to other countries, the societal preparation for the aging population will experience a lot of difficulties. Physical ability declines as the elderly go through the aging processes. And as they retire and lose their social roles they enter into a psychological crisis. The elderly and Korea have transitioned from an agricultural, traditional patriarchical society with extended family to an industrial, urbanized society which only focuses on the nuclear family. However, our society is yet to develop a social safety net for the elderly like other developed countries. Because of this the elderly in Korea are experiencing socio-economic and psychological difficulties, including disease, poverty, loss, alienation and so on. The concept of successful aging was first proposed in the 1986 World Congress for International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics, since then successful aging, has sparked interest and a variety of scholarly research has been done on the concept. Typical aging theories include: whole life development , ego integrity, discontinuity theory, active life participation, optimization (SOC) theory, quality of life and subjective wellbeing. This paper is an analysis of the relevance of these six theories of successful aging in relation to volunteering, and spiritual aspects. A common point of the six theories is that rather than associating the aged with decline in physical ability and illness, they argue that the aged can still be physically and psychologically active and can also learn new things. Volunteering basically carries an attribute of willingness, through volunteer work one is able to participate in social activities and gain a higher level of satisfaction with life. Volunteering in a professional capacity also makes it possible for the elderly to have continuous self-learning and professional development. Thus volunteering as elderly after retirement is deemed to be a healthy activity by all the six theories. In addition, young adults can not easily engage in leisure activities due to their responsibilities at home and at work, but elderly are free to break away from the mental bondage and freely rest and relax, this can also be seen as a way for self-development. In this way leisure activity is considered by all six theories as successful aging activities with social participation that is beneficial for interpersonal relationships. Finally, when it comes to application of the six theories to spirituality , only the subjective wellbeing theory and quality of life theory and the self-integrity theory have relation to it while the remaining subjects had no mention of spirituality. That is, according to self-integrity theory a person's life development stages are divided into 8 parts, in old age is time to solve the problem of "ego integrity versus despair".In other words, the outwardly physical, social degeneration can be integrated to a higher power of the ego inner life philosophy. Thus as the elderly lose interest and value for the outward things they are able to concentrate more on the inward spiritual things. The subjective well - being and quality of life theories have a multidimensional definition of quality of life, and interpret aging to have three separate complete psychological phases of whole life development, personal growth and period to integrate mental health. Therefore, based on the quality of life and subjective wellbeing theory it this time period can be said to enable a more in-depth experience with the spiritual through psychological integration. According to studies on purification and Yim the higher the level of existential spirituality the greater the effect it has on successful aging. Therefore based on the above analysis, for a successful aging policy there is need for further research that can create a social environment in which to further a variety of activities from the currently existing simple physical health dimension. Research that will allow the development and operation of programs related to spiritual activities and a volunteering system that can take advantage of the elderly retired citizens who have expertise in a variety of areas to build on
