This article aims to explore and review the romantic musical techniques in the songs of Robert Alexander Schumann (1810-1856), who combined literature and music to elevate the songs to the stage of art. We thus proceeded our study on three songs which were based on the poems of Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), that is.「Die Lotusblume」in Myrten op.25,「Was will die einsame Träne」,and「Du bist wie eine Blume」, and as a result, drew following conclusion. First, the German art song is the fruit of romantic music, which is a new genre from a combination of literature and music. In particular, as the most representative composer of German art song, Schumann's melody and free chord were based on his understanding of literature, and, rather than a mere accompaniment, the piano played a independent role in order for an emphasis on accompaniment. Second,「Die Lotusblume」, the 7th song based on a poem of Heines, has a through composed form with three stanzas. Its most prominent characters we can find are that the flow of melody follows the content of the lyrics, and the accompaniment uses trills for closed harmony in order to express the internal profundity. Third,「Was will die einsame Träne」, the 21st song based on a poem of Heines, has strong gloomy impression of Schumann. We can find that frequent modulations were employed to express the lonely mentality of the composer, and scale sequences and syncopations were applied to highlight the meanings of poetic words. Fourth,「Du bist wie eine Blume」the 24th song based on a poem of Heines was the shortest but the best beloved one by Clara. For the sake of transmitting the meaning of the lyrics and expression of emotion, short rhythms were used very often, and the musical signs on the score blended with the meanings of poetic words so well that the emotion and inner world of the composer are expressed very effectively. This study, we hope, will not only help expand the understanding of Schumann's art songs and romantic music but also be used as practical knowledge for performance.
