The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of stress responses and the mental health of college students and the sociodemographic factors that influence their mental health and stress responses and to examine the characteristics of stress responses unique to college students. For the subjects of this study, 370 college students from six 4 year colleges located in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do was selected. The questionnaires were distributed to 392 subjects and the data of 370 students were analyzed. The study tool used for the study was Simplified Psychodiagnosis Questionnaire(SCL-90-R) and the stress responses index(SRI), and for the statistical methods for verifying the study problems, one-way ANOVA, t-test and exploratory factor analysis were conducted. All statistical analysis was made using the SPSS(PASW Statistics) 20.0. As a result of difference verification and post inspection results, there was a significant difference between overall mental health and stress responses according to various demographic factors of college students, where the influence of religious tendency on the mental health and stress responses was the most insignificant and shown to have a different stress response characteristics compared to general adults. When summarizing the results of this study, it is as follows. First, According to gender, the mental health and stress responses of college students have shown a significant difference. Second: According to grade, the mental health and stress responses of college students have shown a significant difference. Third: According to the presence or absence of religious activities, it was expected that there could be a significant difference between the mental health and stress responses of college students but it has shown almost no significant differences. Fourth: There was a significant difference in stress responses of college students according to major. Fifth: The factor structure of stress response index was somewhat different to a normal adult and it was found that it did not consists of 7 factors but 6 factors of depression, stress, frustration, anger, aggression and somatization, where the fatigue was eliminated when compared with the previous factors. In conclusion, when summarizing the results of this study, it was verified that the mental health and stress responses of college students were found to be significantly affected by the gender, grade and major and shown to have a different stress response factors compared to general adults. Therefore, the significance of the study lies in the fact that, by verifying that such demographic variables can significantly affect the mental health and stress responses of college students, the results can be applied to the counseling and treatment in and outside the school and to the prevention of accidents associated with stress and their stress management.
