The Fe-high Mn austenitic alloys are attractive as advanced high strength structural alloys due to their high strength and ductility, which are enhanced by their martensitic transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) or twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP). Because stacking fault energy (SFE) of austenite (γ) plays a key role on these deformation mechanisms, accurate SFE measurements are typically conducted using X-ray or neutron diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy and thermodynamic calculation. Among them, thermodynamic calculations are most frequently used because of their simplicity and easiness. SFE values are typically calculated using four different energy terms: the chemical, magnetic, and elastic strain Gibbs free energies and the interfacial energy between the fcc austenite and the hcp ε martensite. However, to date, there are few studies on the interfacial energy between γ and ε phases and elastic strain energy occurring during ε martensitic transformation in Fe-Mn-C alloys. Moreover, there is no report on the relationship between the carbon concentration and the elastic strain energy in Fe-Mn-C alloys. Accordingly, it is so difficult to accurately calculate the SFE values of Fe-Mn-C alloys. Therefore, using on first-principles density-functional theory calculations, we initially study the surface energetics and its associated electronic structure of fcc Fe(111) and hcp Fe(0001), as well as the interfacial properties of the fcc Fe(111)/hcp Fe(0001) system because there is no report on interfacial properties of pure Fe. Interestingly, we find that the zero-temperature interfacial energy of this system becomes negative, largely accounted for by chemical bond formation at this interface, as shown from our electronic structure analysis. Consequently, this study provides an initial platform for the fundamental understanding of iron interfaces which is closely related to the SFE in iron alloys. Secondly, the elastic strain energy and its contribution to the SFE of γ were quantitatively investigated as a function of the C concentration in Fe-15Mn-(zero to 0.37)C (wt.%) alloys. The elastic strain energy was evaluated in both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous states using measured values for molar volume change, strain, and the elastic properties, which are affected by the γ to ε martensitic transformation. The elastic strain energies calculated in homogeneous and inhomogeneous states and their contributions to the SFE are reduced with increasing C concentration. These values were similar because of the insignificant difference in the shear modulus between the γ and ε phases. The contribution of each energy term to the SFE decreased in the following order: chemical, interfacial, elastic strain, and magnetic energies. The elastic strain energy has been neglected, to date, whereas the magnetic energy has been considered for calculating the SFE. The elastic strain energy must be considered for an accurate calculation of the SFE, particularly, when the carbon concentration is lower than approximately 0.4 wt.%. Furthermore, I systematically investigate the effects of C on the slip planarity, twinning behavior, and strain hardening in austenitic Fe-31Mn, Fe-29Mn-0.3C, and Fe-25Mn-0.6C (wt.%) alloys with equivalent SFE of approximately 37 mJ m-2, through the aforementioned accurate SFE calculation of Fe-Mn-C alloy. The Fe-31Mn alloy occurred ε martensitic transformation, whereas the Fe-29Mn-0.3C and Fe-25Mn-0.6C alloys showed mechanical twinning although three alloys had same initial microstructure of γ and SFE over 37 mJ m-2. The Fe-31Mn alloy exhibited the lowest yield stress, total elongation, and ultimate tensile strength. This is because the quasi-cleavage cause by ε martensitic transformation due to the low mechanical stability of austenite and low stress concentration for twin nucleation. The addition of C to the Fe-high Mn alloys increased both the yield strength due to solid solution hardening and the ultimate tensile strength due to significant strain hardening with a large elongation of over 75%, resulting from mechanical twinning. It is was because both the low critical stress and dislocation density required for mechanical twinning and the thinning of the mechanical twins due to the low shear modulus caused by the addition of C.
