This thesis aims to propose the role and its application of body on keyboard instruments, the piano and organ, and the correct posture for keyboard musicians by affirming the importance of understanding body structure based on body awareness. Body awareness is the ability to recognize internal and external changes of the body through physical cognition of multiple senses and experience of those senses. It is also the ability to purposefully focus on the series of small and large changes of feelings that occur within the body when one moves. According to fundamental musculoskeletal anatomy theory, our body is composed of structure and joints that allows the body to carry its weight and balance. A keyboard musician must, therefore, remember to evenly distribute his or her weight from the joint under the cranium throughout the shoulder, hip, knee joints and the ankles. Use of the whole body in physical and mental awareness is imperative when performing. Moreover, deep observation and accurate understanding of the most used body parts - the neck, hips, shoulders, arms, and hands - are necessary. Body structure and muscles are intimately related, which means that proficient performance becomes possible only when all bodily functions and movements are used in one accord. This thesis provides an opportunity for keyboard musicians to reflect on and alter their already formed incorrect habits, movements, and posture. Going through this process is ultimately necessary for developing quality performance. Hence this thesis explains the relationship of body awareness and its application for better performance based on a thorough analysis of body structure and movements.
