Among various membrane types, the hollow fiber membrane is popular owing to its many advantages: higher membrane area than the flat sheet, easier removal of the contaminants, etc. On the other hand, the PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) is popular, too, due to its higher machinability, stronger chemical and thermal resistance compared to other materials. Thus, the PVDF hollow fiber membrane is very spotlighted as a separation membrane, but it is vulnerable to the fouling of the membrane because the material PVDF is hydrophobic. With such problems in mind, this study was aimed at enhancing the hydrophilicity of the PVDF hollow fiber membrane. To this end, a hydrophilic polymer blending that requires no additional process was used to produce a PVDF hollow fiber membrane. The TIPS (thermally induced phase separation) that would allow for production of a higher tensile hollow fiber membrane was applied, while a blended plasticizer was used. As a result, a comparably higher tensile strength could be warranted. Furthermore, a pore former and a surfactant were added to enhance the flux of the hollow fiber membrane. In addition, in order to solve the problem of the lower hydrophilicity of the PVDF, a hydrophilic polymer blending was applied to enhance the hydrophilicity of the PVDF hollow fiber membrane. In particular, in order to produce a higher hydrophilic hollow fiber membrane, such hydrophilic polymers as PMMA, S-PSf and EVOH were blended with PVDF, and thereby, the enhancement of the hydrophilicity of the PVDF hollow fiber membrane was tested. Besides, a melting and spinning device was used to melt and blend the polymer, the plasticizer and the additives, and thereby, the blended materials were frozen below the temperature for the phase separation. On the other hand, the PMI and a tension tester were applied to measure the average size of the pores and the tensile strength, while the SEM was used to analyze the sectional structure. After all, a mini module was produced to check the hydrophilicity. Besides, the DCA was used to measure the contact angle of the hollow fiber membrane in order to check the change of the hydrophilicity.
