ABSTRACT A Study on the Family Relationships Recovery for Application of Bowen’s Family Therapy Young-Suk Kim Department of Social Welfare Counselling, Graduate School of Seoul Venture University, Seoul, Korea (Supervised by Professor Sang-Hae Byun, Ph. D) This study was carried out to find a way to recover the relationship of families at risk in the Korean society by applying self differentiation, triangular relationship, brother ranking, nuclear family emotional system, social emotion process, family projection process, multigenerational transmission process. To achieve the study purpose, Bowen's theory was applied to a family at the risk of divorce (Case C) and analysis was made to see how the theory alleviates psychological symptoms including anxiety, improve triangular relationship, and enhance the level of self differentiation Structural problems of the client of the case C were as follows: First, the family had conversation cut off among family members due to dysfunctional family communication and had a difficulty in interaction. Second, the client's husband(the father) had a negative -authoritarian- rearing attitude with the effect that he placed the responsibility of bringing-up children solely on the shoulders of the client(the mother). In this particular family, the father was authoritarian and this caused the client(the mother) to have a burden on the child rearing and thus develop anxiety, causing confusion in emotion and behavior. Third, uneasy emotional systems triggered by the undifferentiation of the original family led to a chronic triangular relationship, which in turned caused chronic anxiety. This was manifested in the family relationship, resulting in the lowered level of self differentiation of younger generation (children). In other words, the anxiety at the parent level in the at-risk family is inherited from generation to generation. This study has significance in that a counseling practice employing Bowen's family therapy theory is effective to analyze the composition of the original family of a given client and the relationship among multigenerational family members, alleviate the anxiety level of families suffering confliction, and enhance their of self-differentiation. The study findings will contribute to further development and application of Bowen's family therapy theory more widely. Key Words: Family Therapy, Self Differentiation, Triangular Relationship, Family Tree, Genogram
